I wish I had more time to look at this. Since you're in court tomorrow I really don't think I'm going to do you any justice here. Here's the only thing I can find on points: http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codes_displaySection.xhtml?lawCode=VEH§ionNum=12810. They're enumerated and there's a whole list of violations that receive 0 points, but none that apply to your situation.
I have a feeling your lawyer asked them to reduce the charges or change them to something else. Depending on what the original violation was you may or may not be able to do the same here. What Ranger Bob said sounds like a good way to go. I wasn't able to find anything anywhere that specified that the sign had to be x feet from the stop in order to be legal, so you might be careful if you're going that route. In any case like he said the officer is going to make a statement and he's just going to say that it was in fact the proper distance. Let me know if you can think of what the other ticket was for, I'll see if I can find anything that might lead somewhere. Otherwise your best bet is probably to plead mercy. If you're respectful of the judge, the officer and the guy who put up the sign the wrong way, and can convince the judge you made an honest mistake, you may be able to ask him to reduce the ticket.
