I have read SOOOO many posts and entire threads talking about the lack of parking at truck stops. I'm a total noob, but it seems to me that there is a high level of demand and that the supply side of truck stops should build out to match the level of need. Supply/Demand, invisible hand, etc.
Is that not the case? Or have truck stop companies just not caught up yet? Seems to be some money to be made here. . . .
Thanks for any insight. . . .

Illegal parking is a good revenue source for states and municipalities.
Trucking companies are aware of the problem but their hands are tied due to mandatory Elogs.
States can help by allowing breaks in rest areas and weigh stations, but really couldn't care less.
Truck stops can only do so much because land and permits are expensive.Tx Countryboy, Lepton1, Intothesunset and 7 others Thank this. -
Unless there is a high demand in the area and a truckstop can charge enough to park to pay for itself, there is no real incentive for them to build and maintain , much parking.
There are some areas, that will not let anyone build a truckstop under any circumstances, there is even cities that have bought them out strictly to get rid of them.BoyWander, Intothesunset, Opendeckin and 3 others Thank this. -
The truckstops have zero incentive to expand parking because many don’t spend any money in the store. They simply use the parking place and leave their trash behind.

Truck drivers don’t spend money so a paybto park model is the only way to monetize the idea.....and they only pay to park out of desperation but just for fun let’s do some math.
100 parking spots x $25 x 365 nights = $912,000 annual gross revenue. What would it cost to buy a 15 acre lot in a major metropolitan area?Intothesunset, thelushlarry, FlaSwampRat and 3 others Thank this. -
Finding 15 acres in a major area would be one thing, and a lot of that stuff sell by the square foot,
I don't think too many places are getting 25 bucks parking though either., just a few and probably on the smaller side could get that price.Intothesunset, FlaSwampRat and rank Thank this. -
If everyone spent what I spend at truck stops, all truck stops would go out of business.
That is, if they actually relied on what I bought at the store or for a parking space.
They make their money on fuel sales and in the shop, for the most part, from what I can see.GhentSaintPeters, Snailexpress, Intothesunset and 4 others Thank this. -
Okay, you're crazy.

The very reason that very few truckstops exist anymore, drivers decided we needed fuel stops instead.FlaSwampRat and D.Tibbitt Thank this.
