I have a 2008 Volvo VNL780 with a D16 motor. The truck recently began cranking for a long period of time before starting and gave me the MID128 SID21 FMI3 code which I found out was for the camshaft position sensor. After replacing the sensor the engine starting went back to normal, however today I'm experiencing hard starting again and the same code is back. I talked to a dealer and they're telling me I need a new sensor harness, which is apparently tied into the main engine harness costing $1600 just for parts or $3200 with labor. Does anyone know whether it's possible to just bypass the engine harness with a separate wire and tie it in later on. Thanks

Just follow from sensor plug upwards. 90% of the time frayed/broken wiring is found within 1 foot of sensor plug or at plug itself. Concentrate on where weather would have the most effect on wiring.

On the Volvo D12 engine there are two sensors, I would respect there are in the same place on the D16, one is on the crank shaft in front of the engine and the other one is on the flywheel, they both Monitor the same thing, timing, if one goes bad the other one takes over. One of the symptoms is hard starting, place both sensors the same time also with the metal gasket. If you get an ECM periodic maintenance flash on your screen this is also related to those two sensors in question
QUALITYTRUCK and KB3MMX Thank this.
