Say we have our own authority and insurance. We go to Iowa to pick up the truck. We toodle on over into Nebraska and buy a trailer. We need to get back to TX to get the truck and trailer tagged. Can we haul a load so we don't eat the deadhead? We'll have operating authority and insurance but the truck and trailer won't technically be registered. Anyone know if this is legal?

The fine for driving an unregistered truck is about $2500. Just not worth it. We were wanting to move that truck on Friday without it and the dealer said don't be crazy.

BTW, $6k fine if you swap tags.

If you bought the truck before you go to pick it up have them overnight the title or MSO to you and pick up the tag before you leave(and IFTA) Get a copy of the 2290, or all you need is the serial number to go pay it. No 2290,no tag. Trailer can go on a paper tag since trailer tags are no longer apportioned. You can have a apportioned tag transfered from your old truck to your new.

Heck, when I picked up my tractor, the dealer put a car "in transit" sticker on my windshield. Of course that piqued the interest of the only hen house between where I got the truck and where I was going (home). I got a full inspection courtesy of the Iowa DOT. When I got the trailer, I had the same dealer "in transit" sticker, but it was in a folder. That same hen house was closed, no issues. Now I'm ready for 'em with plates, permits, ifta stickers, annual inspection stickers, insurance, and all that other happy horse pucky. I've got all my documentation in a binder, each page in a protective sleeve.

The dealer should be able to issue a temporary tag....call it a paper tag if you will to get you where you need to go.

I've operated a truck on a temp registration for 90 days or so before the permanent tags came in.

Ya'll that close to pulling the trigger on your new venture????????

Yeah, what he said. We finally got approval on truck financing. WOOHOO :wav: We're planning to buy the trailer with cash..
So we can drive back to TX on the temp tags? But can we haul a load on those temp tags?
