empire cat is telling me I need a couple of new injectors on my 2001 Freightliner. I could save a ton of $ installing reman injectors myself. The procedure in the repair manual looks pretty straightforward other than inputting the new injector code into the ecm but planning to install the same part # I am taking out so performance characteristics should be same. I don't have the cat IT software. I've done this job before on an N14. I have shop, tools and time.

Good or bad idea? Has anyone done this and if so what issues did you encounter?

    Thx.

The injector trim codes are specific to each individual injector. They are flow tested and assigned a trim code based on flow. Everyone is different. The codes help the ecm balance fuel to each cylinder. Not changing the codes can lead to some cylinders burning hotter or colder. If you want to change the injectors yourself see if a shop will change the trim numbers for you when you are done. It might run fine without changing the numbers but it might run rough.

This is all assuming a c-13 and c-15 use the same philosophy. I'm not familiar with the smaller

The most I'd chance running it would be to a place with CAT ET to get the proper codes updated into the ECM. Shouldn't take more than a half hour to reprogram. Make sure you write down the new codes and which position they're in or else you'll be pulling the valve cover again.

    Thanks for the quick replies.

My only question is whether this is necessary if replacing with the exact same part # as the manual says "if the new fuel injector group's electronic code is not entered, the previous fuel injector group's characteristics are assumed".

Yep. As lester said the ECM has no idea the injector is new and there are flow differences between the injectors of the same P/N. When they flow test them at factory they use the injector code to allow the ECM to compensate for a higher or lower than nominal flowing injector. This balances the fuel delivery across all cylinders.

injector install is easy as pie on c12. however, you may not need injectors. I had 2 throwing a code last year. truck was missing and some times start and stall. I drained all my fuel out of tank and into a drum using 20 dollar harbor freight water pump. the small 12v one. Then i put exactly 5 gallons back in the tank along with one gallon of diesel clean in. I let the truck high idle with that sever concentrate in until the tank was almosy empty. Shut the truck off, drained the remaining gallon or 2 out of the tank and let me tell you, that fuel was black. Filled the tank back up with the fuel i drained but did not start truck. I let that diesel kleen mixture stay in the whole system all night. NExt morning after a few hiccups, truck started and i ran it like hell that day. Wouldnt you know it, the truck starts like new and no misses and the injector codes dissapeared after a few days. Alot cheaper than buying new injectors, so worth a try for you
