Cross the small wire on the sol. to large one next to it, works best with clip on wire to small wire an cross it over to hot wire on sol.

It will spark when you touch it at first but should turn the starter when you jump the posts

"When I turn the key it just knocks."

You say it knocks, what seems to be knocking, that is where is the knocking coming from?

I wonder if with the truck sitting he has a battery gone bad and dragging the rest down. one bad battery can keep a jumpstart from working. I think with the cold weather this may be the problem

    Could be.

I remember once many of us was laying over about 5 days & could not get loads back from California. I remember one driver in an old Pete & his truck would not start. He got several different hands to try and jump start but all it would do is barely turn over. Finally he bought new batteries & it started up & he was on his way.

It was not the batteries. I have two different drivers try to jump it. Was not the weather playing it's role because it has been around 60 the past few days down here.
I ended up getting a road call service come and look at it. Found a fried wire on the starter and changed that out. However it still wouldn't turn on. The solenoid was determined to be the problem. Go figure I spent 800 two weeks ago on a new starter and this happens.. Anyway I ended up having it towed to the overhaul facility. Looking forward to getting her back <3

Mine does that once in a while even after new starter. Shop showed me how to just turn the radiator fan a little bit (only works with engine warm as Cat has so much compression when cold can't turn the engine by hand this way.) It just moves the ring gear to a different spot and away she goes. One shop said ring gear has a bad spot and it is a roll of the dice when it hits. Other shop said an engine will always shutoff in the same spot so that can't be it? Go figure. Make a fool out of a guy doesn't.
