is there any way to reset a password on a ecm without knowing the current one, bought a used truck, and checked the codes, dealer said they could not clear faults due to a password on the system. tried the last 6, 8 of vin. have build sheets on truck but the password is blank.
    Thanks

You can go in with cat et and reset customer passwords but it requires factory passwords to complete. What it sounds like to me that they can not clear the critical codes because they need factory passwords to reset that also

You can go to any truck dealership and they can get a code from "CAT" and you can install your own code, then you change parameters you can clear the events codes but when you go and print history, all the codes, events and critical events will still come up. I do not remember it being that expensive $500.00 but "CAT" does change prices. Just a thought!

I agree to go to any truck dealership and get the code from them. I can't remember what CAT charges but I remember thinking it was pretty high

I think the $500 fee is only if you uprate your horsepower, but I could be wrong.
