With a non resonant antenna it's still no match for mine in the listening department.
    How far is too far?

Up here where I am the interstate as we would call it I-57 a couple of years from now is not too difficult. There is a college town down that way and its dead at night.

There is a loves in Searcy off 44 I think with room for 60 trucks give or take. Its essentially boiled down to a fast food hardees with fuel leaving off everything else.

There is not much value per-se to the radio in this area Because the good stuff is on the ham or online with repeating websites rebroadcasting online.

Well I run a Baby tarheels antenna with a SDC102 tuner, works just fine. Now that I'm back in the same tractor all the time, I drive days my son drives nights, SO I dont pull it off the tractor at the end of the day. Not say'in its better or worse than any other but it makes me happy, that's all I care about. That and my Kenwood TH74A, gives me good coverage overall for the areas Im running in now, Owens Valley thru San Diego, Some areas have repeater access, while lots of poor or no coverage in the desert areas. Still use my Yeasu FT65 a lot as well. I dont run the ICOM in the truck its in my Pickup not in my Kemira truck

i'd say about 1 mile from the state highway, and about 2.5 to 3 miles from the interstate.

surrounded by all sorts of buildings, tree's and electrical wires, cables, etc.

i'd have to put up a very high rooftop antenna, to get past the end of my block, let alone to the highways.

    not gonna happen.

    too far away.

Not really You'd be surprised, about 30 approx from the ground would probably work fairly well. 15 to 20 feet off the roof. You could use Rg213u or Rg214u and pick out a decent antenna 1/2 to 5/8 wave.

I live about 7 miles from the interstate surrounded by tall trees and houses and my tiny mobile antenna easily makes the trip to the interstate. A tall base antenna shouldn't have any problems talking 5 miles from the bottom of a valley surrounded by trees and buildings assuming those listening have the squelch off.

It rarely gets used, but I have a Cobra 29 LX in the cubby hole with an RK56 mic.

i am older than dirt, i don;t think it's a good idea to get up on my roof.

and no, i will not hire anyone to do it either.

for those of you that want or wish to have a base station, go for it.
