Hi, my name is Michael and I live in NYC. I want to start by saying I love driving more than anything else, and drive about 30,000 miles a year in my car for fun. I have a very high tolerance to traffic and driving for 6-7 hours non-stop (it feels like 10 minutes to me). Recently I drove from NYC to Rhode Island and back non-stop because I felt like it. I also have a perfect driving record as of now.
I had a problem with the DOT physical examiner though. He was nasty, and claimed "no way I can even do the rest of the DOT physical" when he saw on my form that I had checked the box for anxiety. I am on a low dose of Lexapro that causes me 0 side effects (such as drowsiness for example) and I literally deliberately go driving to relieve anxiety/mental distress when I have it! He was also unprofessional and rude, telling my dad "find something else for him" when he went to get the refund. Nowhere did it say in the CDL drivers manual that anxiety is an instant disqualification. Driving is my only skill, the one thing that doesn't wear me out in life, and helps with anxiety. I've been doing 200+ mile driving sessions every other day for fun for over 4 years so far and it hasn't gotten boring yet. I would love to have some kind of cross country driving job but if this is going to be an issue I don't know what to do. I reported the examiner to the driving school, have no idea why the recommended him.

@Moose1958 probably has some information on Lexapro.

Lexapro Uses, Dosage, Side Effects & Warnings - Drugs.com
Lexapro (escitalopram) is an antidepressant from the group of drugs called selective reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) and is used to treat certain types of depression and anxiety. It is not known how Lexapro works, but it is thought to block the reuptake of serotonin by nerves. This results in an increase in serotonin … See more -
I was on Lexapro until earlier this year and it was no problem on my DOT physical.
I've been told that problems can come in when somebody is on meds like ativan or xanax because they have a sedating effect...this isn't an issue with SSRI antidepressants. -
Go to another examiner. Do not volunteer information that is not requested. The same goes for your job search. -
The problem is with your DOT doctor. He doesn’t want to certify you because that drug can cause drowsiness. It’s their call if they are willing to accept liability.
Get a note from your prescribing doctor and go find another DOT physician..for best results find a Chiropractor that is certified to give the physicals.
Your prescribing doctor needs to say that the Lexapro doesn’t affect your ability to drive.. -
I will, the one the driving school recommended seemed to not know what he was doing. Since anxiety has no effect on my driving ability and never has, I won't mention it from now on. The examiner also asked me out of the blue "what's wrong with your hand" as soon as I sat down (have no clue what he was referring to, it wasn't shaking and I don't have a twitch disorder or anything), he didn't explain anything else, just basically kicked us out for no reason. This was the examiner in Jamaica Queens, on hillside Avenue (immigration and DOT medical office). I am a 23 yo guy with no underlying physical health problems, so the fact that I had an issue with this is astonishing.

Yes, I am currently, but wasn't at the time I tried to do the exam. I was just pointing out that it isn't one of the disqualifying drugs anyway, so that wouldn't have mattered even if I was on it back then.
