I'll chime in. Ive said before the main reason I got to trucking dates to age 6 being around truckers at the tavern at the end of their day or beginning of a night run to Chicago etc.
It was further encouraged absolutely when the DOT allowed the Deaf to drive. There is a cultural saying among them that if anyone can do something well, the deaf has to do it twice as good to be accepted. (OR gtfo) Many deaf from those days of school will never be more than say a dishwasher. Bless them. But they are using and enjoying what God gave them in life.
Schooling for me for trucking was a interesting conflict with 28 people, 23 of them classmates and the rest of them instructors who did not understand what to do with me. One day one pulled me into the big office and asked questions, he got a education. The class settled fast after that. That was a very important day.
Towards the end of schooling we had maybe a acre of gravel to play in and about 1/2 mile of abandoned road to roll around in competition with one another, fastest to dock fastest through barrels fastest to top of shifting and back to zero etc. We really rolled them old trucks through the rodeo. Even fastest to Parrallel park followed by the most precise. (We had one that was a god doing that among us, even though the state did not require it)
School in trucking was a wonderful time. Stressful because you are learning. But it's set in stone what you did learn.
I had about oh... almost 40 years now from school. I would give all that up for another few hours racing my favorite instructors one more time. They were very good. (So am i....) it was a purpose driven learning by doing.
Hardly something I see today. I think we have need of that.
