Yesterday, I drove across US 20 from Central Oregon to Boise, I started noticing all the cell phone use, both 4-wheelers and big trucks, informally I would guess between 1/4 and 1/2 of the vehicles I met had the driver with a phone to the ear.
Granted, not much on that stretch and I saw no law in almost 300 miles, BUT just seemed to be a crazy amount of users violating the hands free regs. In Oregon, all drivers both CDL and non-CDl must use a hands free device if using a cell phone, and yes, I had my hands free deviceI guess the law only applies if you think you might get caught?
Just an observation...

Husband was on the road tonight talking about a very erratic driver, turned out the person had a cellphone. All states that I know of have the no hands law, and supposed to be no texting, but I see so many that are using the phone talking, I can't imagine how they can text at the same time. It is nice having cell phones vs not having them, but people need to wizen up a little before they get in a wreck.

I wish all states would have hand held cell phone use as a primary offense. There is no reason not to use a blue tooth device.
NavigatorWife and Cranky Yankee Thank this. -
The safety is the most important issue for blue tooth use I know, but its also so much easier to be hands free. I wonder how many big trucks have been caught out of compliance with the hands free law?

Not all of the states. The only law that is for all of them is for the commercial driver.NavigatorWife and aiwiron Thank this.

Getting caught using them should be the same consequences as a DUI . Maybe that would cut it down some !
NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
You get nothing more than a slap on the wrist with a DUI. Just look no further than the dozen or so threads here of people having multiple DUIs and returning to work driving a CMV.

That really doesn't matter with truck drivers. The DOT will say they pulled you over for an inspection which they can legally do at anytime. They'll run your license and check your logbook, then... BTW, I've seen you talking on the cellphone.
It's $2500 first offense and $5000 second offense. That's one expensive phone call.
Even with the laws you still see them talking. I watched a truck two days ago yapping away. Then we passed a TN full grown going the other way which he didn't see him. The funny thing was here come a Mustang passing me doing at least 75 in a 55. He was about a 1/2 mile in front of me and here come that trooper hammer down. I gave him a thumbs up! It took him a good 2-3 miles to catch him.

I wonder who is worse in using the texting, under teens and young adults, or older adults?
