Hey owner-ops, don't worry, I'm not leaving my company job anytime soon. I know there's still a lot of overcapacity. I'm in the preliminary, information-gathering stage, specifically, looking at costs, including health insurance, life insurance, 401k and HSA contributions, payroll tax etc. because I don't have a spouse whose benefits I can mooch off.
I've plugged in all costs at the calculator at rigbooks.com, and I want to see if my estimates are even close to what you guys pay in the real world. The $125k wage for myself is one thing that's not negotiable. I wouldn't bother with all this unless or until there's a decent jump in income compared to my company gig. I'm also pretty firm on 8mpg because that's something I've been able to achieve as a company driver for the last 5+ years. Everything else is open to discussion.
The miles and revenue assumes reefer freight, running something resembling a 5-days out, 2-home schedule. I'm assuming $2.50/mile loaded miles with 10% deadhead miles. Obviously if my assumptions about all these costs are close to reality, then I would not even think about making the jump to becoming an O-O until rates go up a good 25% or so and stay there.
But again, that's why I'm checking, because I don't know what costs I may be underestimating or overestimating.

I want to note that I've lumped in tires, preventative maintenance, repairs, breakdown / tows, etc into the one line "repairs."

If all you want is to make the most money possible then just stay a company driver.. You arent going to get rich running a trucking business nor are you going to make much more then a top notch company hand.. But you absolutely will take all the risk and ### ####ings as they are dealt to you daily..

Are you going to lease onto a company or are you going to get your own authority. If your own authority, I noticed your have not included liability insurance.
tscottme and basedinMN_ Thank this. -
Your PM and supplies need to be added in, you have to build and maintain those funds all the time.
AModelCat and basedinMN_ Thank this. -
Tolls $21,250? That’s insane! If you’re planning that much I’m guessing you’re running the North East..if so your fuel costs would be much higher.
I have an ezpass account for tolls and so far this year I’ve used about $300
Scale tickets I’ve spent $13.50 this year and I haul mostly 40-45,500 lb loads. Invest in one of these trailer scales, calibrate it it’ll make life so much easier.Attached Files:
