    Hey Guys,

Looking into getting my class B in NJ. Little confused on what steps I need to take. Do I obtain the Permit before going to a school? Do I need to do ELDT before anything? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Ronny

Best advice I can give is to get the CDL-A.
The reason is, with the CDL-A you can also drive for companies that hire CDL-B drivers.
But, companies that hire CDL-A drivers won't hire drivers with a CDL-B.

    Thanks,

My current company is going to be upgrading to a bigger straight truck in the near future so class b is all I need. Just wondering what the first steps in the process are.

Is your current company the ONLY company you will ever work for in your life? If so, then get the B. Otherwise, get the B nonsense out of your head and get the A. They are going to cost you the same. The tests are (almost) the same. The requirements as far as licensing and the DOT is concerned are the same.

As for what you need to do FIRST, well thats easy: find a school that has a good reputation and ASK THEM what you need to do in your state. You are going to be paying THEM, so they are going to be able to answer ALL your questions...

See if they're is a Community Collage that has a class.
    A lot cheaper.
Will the company pay for your training ? Don't hurt to ask..

Better to get the Class A for sure, but here in Michigan, it's about $1,900 for a class b(two week class), and $4,900 for a class A(3 week class). If OP's employer is paying for the schooling, class A is going to be a tough sell.

I agree! Get the class A and you have options for the future if you ever need them.
Most likely the schooling will cost the same but I'm not 100% sure that will be true everyplace you go.
