Seems like everyones pullin a spread axle flat, and understandably so.But finding a good used one in my neck of the woods is tough right now,But there are a few closed tandem flats around for sale.So my question is, are these any good for running over the road.if not why?

Sure if you constantly want to be checking and adjusting weight. If you run to Canada, they are perfect.

we ran them sometimes on some old steel flats hauling oilfield stuff, the nice aluminum spreads got too beat up and they worked fine running local/regional because you did your best to guess where to place your load and then ran with it, most likely you weren't rolling across a scale and if you knew you couldn't go around one of the local scales easily you then made sure your weights were correct.

The closed tandem trailers normally have a slider, so it isn't an issue in my experience.
Just be sure that the tandems are on a slider, and are not fixed, and you will be just as good as a spread any day of the week but without the increased tire wear.

It depends on what you haul, how heavy, where you haul it etc. In FL, closed tandems are very popular since we can have up to 44,000 on them, no need for a spread. For OTR though spreads can be very beneficial in loading and scaling.

I have the Turbo Brake, not the Exhaust Brake. It was an upgrade when I ordered the rig new.
It does OK to be honest, just have to run the engine fan as well as the turbo brake, and keep the revs up a little.
I have heard the exhaust brake is like holding your hand out of the window though.....:biggrin_25512:
