I have a Cobra 148GTL with sound tracker, and I run an OLD RK56 on it. I took it out of my old truck and put it in my big metal boat of a Crown Vic. I put a decent magnet mounted antenna on it, running RG8X coax. After checking my SWR and adjusting my whip length, I have a 1.2 across all channels. Then, I come out a few weeks later after the install and go to start yappin' away, but when I key the radio makes a whining sound. It's fine when I'm not transmitting, but as soon as I key, it makes this noise. Any ideas on what it could be?

Did you try a stock mic?
-
Do you have a good ground to the radio bad grounds always cause issues and how do you have it powered CIG lighter or did you run wires?
-
I haven't yet. I have a good 4 or 5 radios, but all have different mic plugs. You think it could be the mic? I'll ride out to a buddy's and see if he has a Cobra 4 pin mic I can check with.
-
I have it run through my stereo fuse in my fuse panel, and ground going to a screw in my door frame. It's a 91 Crown Vic so there's plenty of metal.
-
Wire it straight to the battery with some 10 gauge wire. Be sure and put a fuse out there by the battery too. I don't know if that will solve your problem, but that is the correct way to power a radio.

Every time I had that happen it was a mic cord problem, torn ground lacing, soldered wire connection broken loose, or broken wire, that type of thing.
-
That's what I'm thinking, the mic cord has a broken wire, the best thing to try is another mic.
-
I am more than happy to hear that. I'd much rather get my mic rewired than have to fix my radio. I'll go hunt down a mic later today.

That's how it was powered before, I just don't have enough wire to run it to the battery. It'll probably be wired with 8 gauge because what I use with my amp. Shouldn't be a problem, should it?
