ok so i have been driving for about a yr now and I have learned to float my gears but every once in awhile i grind it still or force it in when i really shouldnt.
So outta curiousity does anybody know how long it would take to mess up a transmission by doing this?
I havent done it yet and dont want to but nobody is perfect and when you get really tired or start to get nervous cause of bad weather or an accident happens in front of you is when i notice that my floating starts to suck lol. yes i still know how to double clutch and still do from time to time but i like to float better dont know many drivers who dont.
could be a stupid question but....

Depends on a number of factors. Every transmission will be grinded at some point. Whether it holds up or breaks depends on just how much abuse it goes through and the severity of it. I've seen a brand new transmission need replacing within a month of being put into service. And I've seen old fleet trucks from training companies rack up well over one million miles without ever needing any major work to the transmission.

I would just like to point out to the OP that the only stupid question is one that goes unasked.
kerosene jockey, critters, ewill71 and 1 other person Thank this. -
shoot driver I still grind 'em sometimes.lol
it takes a long time to screw one up if it just grinding a little.
now if your forcing it into gear and grinding the crap out of it, then that will mess it up.
I drove another guys new truck yesterday, mines in the shop, had a heck of a time. lol
the gears were tight, mine has 300K and is loosened up some.
and even on mine, I may not quite get it right some times and will get a little "hamburger". as in "grind me a pound"
oh and DO NOT FORCE IT, just do as I did yesterday , keep searching for the right one. lol grinding a little when it's the wrong one.
god, was I embarrassed.lol
been driving forever and sounding like a rookie , oh well, crap happens. -
My trans. has over 1m miles on it and shifts like butter. Had to get a rental about 6 months ago and it was so tight there was no room for error, which I did frequently!!

I scrape mine sometimes still. I actually made an effort to start using the clutch more in certain situations to be easier on the driveline.
I put a new clutch in 2 years ago and new input shaft and shift tower O-ring and the gears all looked like new. Nothing in the oil either. Got a million miles and I am only driver ever. Still tight as new.
Now I've heard some guys really force grind the poor trans into gear and I just gotta laugh and shake my head.
