Hello everyone, i am new to this forum and i have a question for some more experienced mechanics than myself. Any and all help with this matter is greatly appreciated.

I work for a moving company, sometimes moving furniture and sometimes fixing the trucks others tear up. I have been tasked with repairing a truck that had a clanking noise, i got the oil pan dropped and found out that the number 1 rod bearing has been spun. My question is, since it is the only one messed up, can just the one journal be turned safely without having to turn the rest. It is pitted a little but not bad, and wasnt ran very long at all after it spun the bearing.

    thanks everyone, Rookie

for whats involved to disasemble it you need to just replace crank and rod. or just replace engine with another one if there is alot of miles on it. or get a short block assembly.

if only the boss wanted to go that route, pulling motor and trans just to pull the crankshaft out isnt going to be fun, it is an 80s model cab over freightliner. and they rebuilt it over the winter and now that he has all the money in the rebuild, he wants to see if it can be fixed without having to do much else. but believe me i agree that it should be replaced or even traded off, but i dont see it happening.

Before the bearing spun it was running loose. I bet you had low oil pressure? When one runs loose the cylinder will start taking an oval shape. There's more damage than you think.

You can do a quickie fix but you'll be right back where you were. When you get to turning a crank you do a 100% rebuild. I'd do like superhauler said.

You can find the tolerances, use plastigauge and maybe use an oversize bearing for now. But I would plastigauge all bearings and sell, sell, sell....... on Craigslist! :biggrin_2559:

it never lost any oil pressure which is kinda odd, and sounded like an injector that wasnt seated properly. but if we can get the one journal turned by itself we will probably end up replacing the whole shaft. We havent pulled the pistons yet so i havent looked to see if the cylinder is ovaled out yet, but will be sure to check it when we finish looking thru everything.

thanks lol i would rather replace everything and do it right, but the boss signs the checks, so i gotta keep him happy. so i can have the one journal turned and use an over sized bearing, is that what your saying?

i dont think he meant you to turn the crank journal that would cost as much as getting another crank. what he meant was just clean it up and slap another bearing in it and sell it FAST!! you can get some crookets cloth(not emery cloth) and polish the journal up if its not real bad. but thats not an ethical thing to do if you dont tell the buyer what you did.
