Hey all
Couple questions, hopefully you guys have some advice,
I started driving commercially in 1988, I started out with a class "C" driving a van making auto glass deliveries around the state of Michigan,
In 1993 I went to a trucking company and worked my way up to a class "A" license driving regionally (5 states, MI,IN.OH IL.WI.)... Did that for 10 years
went into the office to be a dispatcher (alright enough with the jokes)
kept my class "A" and used it when drivers were sick or on vacation and needed something covered.
In 2003 company was bought out by another out of Detroit, changed the name of the company but more or less same company, They brought in a new operations manager and him and I didn't get along well so I opted to return to the road, I went to running at night (Grand Rapids to Detroit)
with an occasional run to IL. or IN..
In 2007 I was diagnosed with VERY early stage lung cancer, I was very blessed that it was found as early as it was, however the tumor was situated in between the two lobes of my left lung so to be safe they removed the entire lung. My Dr. also suggested post chemo, just to make sure it doesn't come back.. Anyway at first my company was very good about it, no problems with time off, they moved me back in the office. etc
About 2 months into chemo, it was very clear that it was going to take some time to get my body used to living with only one lung..(yes it can be done) however my ### hole operations manager didn't like the idea that I would be in the office again for awhile, and he let my go.....Not a big deal I was looking for a change anyway. the guy was a total prick, and I was looking for another job anyway...
This was in 2008, I started my own landscape company, i started running, swimming and getting my body back...
I kept my CDL.. I kept my Medical Card... and am in the best shape of my life, however....this is where the questions begin...
About the DAC... I ordered a copy of my DAC report and received it the mail today...The problem ITS BLANK !!!! is this a good thing or a bad thing
It shows no employment history, no drug or alcohol testing nothing !!
Is the DAC a report for bad info or any info ??
I've had a CDL since 1988
I've been tested for Drugs and Alcohol randomly since 1993
I've only had really only 2 trucking jobs...
Or is it because the companies I worked for were local companies unlike Crete or US Express ??
Second Question.... Where do I go now ???
I was looking online at a company..... One that starts with a C, and ends in an E.. Their web site says
"1 YEAR OTR EXPERIENCE MIGHT BE WAIVED IF PERSON HAS STABLE WORK HISTORY"
Bull !!!!!
I called them, I was told they need at least 6 months OTR exp...
Hmm. 14 years at one company, I guess that Isnt stable enough for them
I know I've been out of the game for 2 years, if i need to I can go for a refresher coarse, I just don't like the idea of training with someone in which I have more seat time then he has ... Mind you I've only drove regionally
5 states...
So if anyone reading this knows of any good companies that would be willing to give me a shot could you please let me know..
I really don't want to be a Swifty... Although Hell it a job ...
Thank you all for taking the time to read this...

You've run into the proverbial Catch 22 with a blank DAC.
Many companies don't submit to DAC. And some of your experience, is pre-DAC.
On the flip side of that. Some companies won't accept any pre-DAC experience...period.
So a clean/blank DAC is a good thing.
Proving your experience, is another. Adding insult to injury, you may have to spend a few weeks with a trainer/second seat "finisher".
Check the companies, and see who offers you the best chance (quickest) at getting into a truck solo. You can also look into jobs with an LTL outfit, working the docks, then move into a truck.

well first, glad to hear you recovered from the cancer. next a clean DAC is a good thing. next, find a way to go back to a trucking school even for the "short class" of 160 hours (?) as your absence from driving for 2 years may hinder you.
use your other work as a way to document your time for the past 10 years, and that's about it. since the other employer let you go due to the time of your recovery that should be NO problem. they will look like the a-holes they are for letting you go in your time of illness.
i say do not look back and charge forward....!! i am sure you will do well, you have already proven you beaten some of life's toughest odds........!!!!!Last edited: Nov 21, 2010

Find a one truck operator who will help you out by giving you a job reference that you worked for him/her.
