I used to run Wi. a lot at night. Near Burlington Hwy 50 wb to hwy 12 interchange. More than once I’ve seen 6-7 or more, just standing out in the road. Huge herd around there. I hit 4 in 4 yrs. 3 in Wi. and 1 in Mi. They nicknamed Me the Deer Hunter Lol. I’m good at holding it steady and nail it. Check for damage. Spray off bottom of Truck, or smell the rot for weeks.

You haven't lived until its dark and your high beams catch the clipped deer in the zipper line trying to crawl back to the shoulder and ends up partially in your lane.

Why would you be going that slow to start with? Do you drive for Prime?

i've hit only one deer that i can recall, at my former employer, god awful sound, and some damage of course. but the truck was driveable.

and that's just what "he" did......came out from the darkness along a brush line......

another deer i hit, (at another job) "she" came right out as well, again from a brush line...and smacko......i was really ticked off at that one more...cuz i dropped my sammich.......and "she" ran away.

i had to resort, to eating my snickers bar instead.

both happened after the midnight hour, no lighting on the roads.

I would brake hard, swerve hard and turn my truck over, get killed or hurt, spill diesel and oil into the environment just to save a cute little deer so some hunter can kill him come deer season.

I told my daughter when she started driving to no panic and run off the road to save a critter, it happens a lot around here and usually ends bad when they hit a tree.

One night she called me and said she ran over a family of raccoons but she didn’t drive off into the woods. I told her to check under the car to see if anything was leaking and if not just come on home. sister in law confirmed the next day she killed five raccoons.

Not really. It's more a matter of choosing the lesser evil.
Yes, it sucks that the deer dies, but better to sacrifice the deer than send 40 tons of mass out of control to do far worse damage, and potentially kill more than just the deer.
Replacing front end parts costs far less than replacing the truck, trailer, cargo and whatever else may be damaged or destroyed by making a sharp correction.
It's choosing the path of minimizing damage than anything.
Nobody I know hunts deer with their truck. It's far less expensive to use a rifle or bow
I've hit 2 deer in my lifetime, and in both instances the deer was perished and I walked away.
My truck wasn't unscathed, as it crushed my front bumper in, but those parts are replaceable.
My life isn't, and neither is yours.

Hold the wheel strongly take your power away and make sure if there is no chance for it to get away get it dead center, shoulder preferably near the heart. It's going to be messy but you will see that your dash cam will validate your situation.

Do not try to do wild stuff with the truck. At the end of the day it's a unfortunate animal strike and that's something part of trucking.

The one thing you can do is if the jacobs is not on already, use a few pounds of your service to buy that deer the time he needs to get clear. But hold your lane and wheel for the smash. Usually it's the one you see that you wont hit. It's the next 4.

Ive been pretty lucky in terms of animal problems. However there were a few that required killing. And it's unfortunate.
