Never tried the horn but the sound of the jake usually gets them moving. If they're just standing in the middle of the road that's a good thing, if they're standing on the side it can be a bad thing.
I don't think anyone mentioned it but when you see one cross the road ahead of you don't be surprised by the other one(s) that may be a few seconds behind them.
The jake is also good to get a moose moving though I've heard the horn can be a real bad idea with them.

I have to offer this thought as a parting shot for some of you afraid of a little deer meat. Bambi has nothing on this...
When you get down along the Red River in Oklahoma or Texas on a state or smaller route, the pavement is a certain charcoal color at night. It's soaks your headlights very much.
You will not see that 4000 pound Bull whose hide is the same color and almost as big as a van.
Only defense? Make sure you have someone traveling in front of you, preferably a local. So if something happens and he or she totals his or her car you will be in a position to help get the Emergency resources to show up.rolloverdude Thanks this. -
Id make sure not to drop my pocket knife at impact and reroute to the nearest walmart for charcoal.

Anyone use those deer whistles you mount on your mirror? I did for a short while. Instead of making deer run away, it seemed to make them want to commit Bambicide.
Instead I have found that Jake brakes are the best thing to send deer running away. One or two "snarls" of a big Cummins and they scatter. I think it's because that Jake sounds like a predator.
The deer whistle? I think it must sound like a weak all in that's bluffing.
I have hit a deer once. Total Bambicide. Her head left an impression in my grill. Her body bent the valve stem of my passenger side steer. I had to wait five hours for road service to replace the stem and get me going again.x1Heavy, rolloverdude and D.Tibbitt Thank this. -

You might have wanted to keep some of those claws.
I agree with Lepton1 regarding deer. Jacobs does sound like a predator when turned on high.
I was up in the NE near the border with Canada when I encountered my first moose. Facing me down a few hundred yards. As I closed the distance at highway speed reaching for the air horn to royally blast the thing, two truckers come back on my radio saying OMFG child don't you touch that effing [profanity horn] stop where you are. So I was in Moose school from that moment. They passed me and then shuffled the moose off the pavement. Never touch the horn they said. Ok fine.Lepton1 Thanks this. -
