Hello, Gentleman and the rest of you guys,
Not sure if this is the proper place for this but here goes. My first and only trucking job was with TMC, I have quit after a little over 2 years. My CSA score is 18 and will be 0 in January, I don't have any tickets or accidents. I gave TMC 2 weeks notice but quit early on the second week, I was unloading in Indianapolis and tapped out, they told me to give them a call when I want to come back...Now I'm at a loss
I was lied to by TMC's recruiter and TMC, not here to bash TMC. (a little late for that) I'm looking for a little guidance. I was thinking of doing reefer after talking to a reefer driver while I tarped a load in 90+ degrees, he was in shorts, flip flops and enjoying himself while I hadn't had a shower, filthy from the lumber tarps long pants, boots, etc, etc. He told me how much he was making $ and it was basically the same as I. But a lot less stress/work. I'm not looking for an easy way out, maybe just a little burnt-out on the black and chrome.I made 64K last year at TMC, this was staying out and not worrying about going home, except for every once in a while when I needed to be home on a weekday for appointments, they made sure I never made those appointments...EVERY SINGLE TIME.
I applied to a reefer company and figured I would get the job no problem, I waited a week and nothing, gave them a call and got voicemail, a little bummed. I read ads daily 65-80K no problemo. I really don't want to be lied to, to get hired. Some ads scream BS to me, I look'm up on here and their safety/OOS record. It's not looking good. I don't mind flatbed but maybe with a smaller company, I would like to average $1300+ a week, don't care about staying out for a month or more. I prefer long haul, those days are the best when all you have to do is drive and enjoy the day, especially going out west.
Notes: flatbed or refeer, $1300+ a week average, little home time/ long haul. I'm in middle Tennessee.
Sorry for the wall of text/rambling, a point in the right direction would be appreciated. I don't want to go crawling back to TMC!

Live by someone who works for A&R
He makes 70k and gets home every weekend. Been there for awhile now. They are pretty good I guess.MattaCracker Thanks this. -
A guy that lived near me in TN makes $72K and home weekends. I think you can stay out if you want. They have terminals all the way to California.

Trust me here. You were treated well pulling a flat and dealing with customers. You will be treated like a piece of less than convict trash dealing with that reefer. Sit allll day, runn alll nite... Always on someones emotional bs scheduling. Gets really effing old..
It takes a certain skill set to legally and proficiently secure loads on a deck. It takes zero brain power to baby sit a reefer.
My experience. Good luck.Lucy in the Sky, Chewy352, Gunner75 and 9 others Thank this. -
+1 on what Arty said. Trust us when we say the difference in the way you get treated between van/reefer and open deck by the customers is night and day. Sure you still get some jerks in flatbed but they are far from the norm. I for one would never go back to gen comm van/reefer freight for any amount of money unless it was for a dedicated customer on both ends that were decent.
You could try Combined Transport. They treat their drivers pretty well, but you will work your butt off loading that glass. Like 4-8 hour load times and you are all over that trailer most of that time, except when you are waiting for the loaders to get to you. Get a passport and be open for OTR and you will almost be guaranteed 3k miles a week. I was making .47 a mile for all miles, plus $50 for crossing the border, and I know they were really starting to crack down on PPG and Pilkington on their load times and detention so things might have gotten better. And they have some regional drivers as well which deal with alot of pre-loaded trailers. But, with 2 years flatbed experience you could easily have the pick of a lot of great smaller fleets and even prolly look at breaking into specialized hauling. Good luck.
Edit: I know Smokey Point is advertising alot on CL as well. Never heard anything bad about them on here really so maybe give them a looksee.Toomanybikes, MattaCracker and CrappieJunkie Thank this. -
Flatbed:
Britton Transport - @MrEd is a trainer there.
