to anyone who has had a detroit 1-box either cleaned or detroit-remanufactured-part-swapped, does your truck give you a dash light or engine code when the filter needs to be swapped out?
I was reading on the detroit page and it says "The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) collects ash and will eventually need to be replaced, but the DDEC system will alert you when filter replacement is required." In the 2012 manual company truck i drove, the check engine light and EGR fault never turned off from 220k to 260k, but it never threw a code that said anything about filter replacement. I rode that truck until it de-rated me onto the shoulder in BFE wyoming, they just replaced the whole 1-box i think.
I just hit 160k miles on the DD13, and I've been noticing the EGR valve clickety-clickety sound a lot more recently. Also, before I might feel a little loss in power only a couple times a month when it starts to do an active regen on the move, but lately it's been at least once a week where i have to drop to 7th to even get up a PA hill.

I don't know if that particular model says if replacement is required or not but engine's will derate for many different issues with the emission system. Could be that there was a fault with something on that company truck and continuing to drive it eventually damaged the aftertreatment system.

They usually need to be baked clean the DPF at about 400,000 miles. I think only the news 2019 truck has display showing how full the DPF is. My 2017 don't show that.

There is an ash accumulator reading, you have to us a shop pc to read it. When it comes time, your truck will throw a DPF ash filter full code (or some other verbiage close). And you will get a check engine light, and it will get progressively worse derates until you get them cleaned. Depends on what you do with your truck. I’ve seen the filters need cleaned @ 240k miles. This can be done for as little as $600 if you do the labor yourself
The company truck had the entire one box changed because it was drive for 40k miles with an egr code and it either pushed a DOC or coated an SCR. That was probably a $15000 repair.
You can ask to check the DPF Ash accumulator at you next service. It’ll be a percentage. You mentioned you’ve lost some power since it was new??? You said you have 160k on this one, have you had the over head ran yet?shatteredsquare Thanks this. -
The Ash accumulator reading is correct if new or reman DPFs are installed and ash accumulator was reset. If engine works properly filters will last about 370-400k miles. If your filters were cleaned before max they will go is about 250-280k miles. Your filters will get clogged but you will not get Dirty/Clogged Filter fault code and Ash accumulator will show 65-75%. You will think its ok and not a time to change/clean them. One beautiful day you will have DOC High pressure code and sometimes DPF Outlet High Temp code. My suggestion is not to clean DPFs. Detroit has reman exchange program for DPfs . Each of them is about $800 exchange. They will go like new ones ~400k miles.
QUALITYTRUCK and shatteredsquare Thank this. -

when I first got it I drove it like a grandma for the first 25k miles, then I got the oil changed and flogged the absolute dog nuts out of it until 50k, (75 mph+ @ 80k lbs all day, deliberate hard acceleration from stops, always using the engine brake on max as much as possible.) Lots of metal in the 50k oil sample! 100k oil sample was back to normal. it's hard to tell if it's loss of power from one thing or another, because in the morning it's lethargic until the oil gets up to 210 degrees, and it's lethargic when I pick up a new load after being empty, until the computer gets used to the new load. but I quit using the PTO to warm it up in the morning (1,000rpm) for about a week, just let it warm up at 750, and the EGR started making it's clickety clack sound after those few days and it felt like it was running on syrup. I went back to the periodic floggings now and in a couple days it's been as peppy as ever, no more EGR sound either. -
What happens in the DOC? that's a module before the filter, is that where the fuel gets dosed into?

DOC is the diesel oxidation catalyst. Its job is to remove hydrocarbons from the exhaust. Its reaction also generates heat for the DPF to aid regeneration. Fuel is often used to dose the DOC to help it generate high heat.
