I work for a smaller family outfit as a part time driver. I work afternoons at my normal gig and then drive for them after work. I am a night owl anyways so it’s perfect job.
long story short, Christmas is a pain for my normal full time job, as people have a hard time showing up to work so I had to pull some 12, and 14 hour days, leaving little time to drive. I forewarned my dispatch that the Christmas week was messy and he said ok not a problem, but I could run on the weekend like normal. He hasn’t gotten back to me yet and usually he has me scheduled for some loads on the weekend.
do you think I upset him? I am not an experienced driver, just 6 months in but I love driving at night and I know to get anything else I need a year. I work at a factory for my normal job. It’s not that I need the money but with baby on the way I wanted some extra cash.
or do you guys think I am overthinking all this?
Dispatch mad?

Plenty of companies will hire you with much less than a year.
Where is your location?
How did you get your cdl?

Yes, some dispatchers are moody like children.
I had a sissy dispatcher do that to me, let me sit for 10 days at home, so I found another job paying twice as much per week, so I left. He had to explain that to the terminal manager, but I didn't care and didn't answer my phone from that company.Woodys, Texas_hwy_287, Vic Firth and 4 others Thank this. -
For now I’d say overthinking. No news is good news.
Get past the holidays and see what happens after the first of the year. Then you should have a more clear picture.
They may very well have not had any loads to run. -
Dispatch will do what dispatch do. With very few exceptions I view them as needy, dependent and tied to my production which relies on accurate information, battle planning and timely decisions executed to capture loads quick.
Essentially dispatcher = Children.
If a dispatcher got mad? you sit. Sooner or later you get hungry.
If they really got annoyed? HA... you have a problem.
The holidays are tough on drivers who are not home with family because the dispatcher will be. You follow me? (One exception with a wonderful outfit one year when I found myself stranded without work through no fault of my own in Texarkarna of all places (UGH... wonderful little independant but man... I wanted out) but had to sit and stay on a pending big load out of there. They handed me like a thousand dollars gratis in both payroll, bonus and gratis for my time and trouble. So no complaining from me.
The load out was worth it in the end.
If dispatch got mad? It depends. I have yelled BS into the dispatchers ear when I learned of a impossible situation or some other snag into a otherwise promising week. They hear that all day long. But get mad? No not the profanity. Just one simple little word... if you use it.
"No." a quiet two letter word.
They will get mad. Trust me. -
Located in Iowa. This is just perfect for me though because the hours fit my life well. It’s an easy 6 hour day out and back drop off and go home. No stress no drama.
Thanks for the advice - I’m newer to trucking, I don’t know if my railroad time counts really, they are impossible to get any verification from.FlaSwampRat Thanks this. -
But if you are not loaded stop and stay somewhere good. You cannot move without information. it costs money both ways. So.. eh. Good luck to you. -
Oh it’s all local work. - make sure I included that. Shuttling grain and various other ag products. Sometimes dairy one night then corn the next.
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
If the hours and money fit your life, then stick with it. If the benefits are good, then do stick with it unless you get burned out and need a change.
Which city are you near or in?FlaSwampRat and x1Heavy Thank this. -
Near the Des Moines area. Luckily my full time job has good benefits, it’s more of an extra income thing, like I said with the baby on the way it’s nice to be able to pay cash for all this stuff and have some set aside for any unexpected hospital bills.
trucking is one of the few jobs I found that pays very well for a part time gig
also glad to be a part of the forum -
Staffing agencies can probably fix you up with part time work if the trucking company starts playing games.
Probably a few staffing agencies around Des Moines that hire cdl drivers.
Lots of drivers on here use Trillium Staffing, but there's plenty more to choose from.FlaSwampRat, Unclepete20 and x1Heavy Thank this.
