I drove past this accident in the direction of travel (westbound) and saw the result. I was not surprised to hear of the fatality, the trailer end almost reached the back of the cab.
Machesney Park man dies in truck crash on I-90 near Route 20 | Northwest Herald
I ask the question because the second truck hit the back of the first truck dead (excuse the pun) on. There did not appear to be any attempt to avoid the collision.
Yesterday was bitter cold in Northern Illinois and Chicago area. Many trucks were on the side of the road with most likely fuel problems. Other were traveling significantly below highway speeds, probably from developing fuel problems. This section of highway has a 60mph limit for trucks, sometimes observed. The article says that the first driver had his four-ways on. Road conditions were dry and the sun made everything bright from the recent snowfall.
RIP driver, though you should still be rolling......
Distracted driving?

Had he been driving a VOLVO and wearing a seat belt he would have survived.
ONLY VOLVO has Steel cabs and sleepers specifically designed for this type of accident / crash.
The rest are nothing but aluminum cans, er cabs and sleepers, designed for the bottom line of the carrier not driver safety.
Let this be a lesson, only work for companies that have VOLVO fleets.
Don't believe me?
Are you hooked on one of the other brands?
Do your own due diligence and research Volvo driver testimonials, crash tests, and saftey ratings.

Steel makes a huge difference.
For those who don't know; VOLVO has also acquired MACK and now has been building their cabs with steel.
I know a lot of you have a bad opinion of Volvo, but ask yourself why. Hearsay? Opinions? or...
Do you have first hand experience?
Does that experience involve a serious crash?
Would you be here today if you were driving something else?
Probably not.
I've seen too many bad crashes over the past 23 years out here, and Every one of them that weren't driving a Volvo died. -
i highly doubt your thesis...
speed, inertia, weights, all play into survival or death. even the best case scenario, someone can still die.lovesthedrive, JonJon78 and x1Heavy Thank this. -
So if I drive a Volvo I won’t die?

I agree. I was towing steel beams when a 4 ton Buick Lesabre convertable just about head on into me with 7 laughing drunk teens at the US23 junction just south of stoney ridge in my own lane.
I had one of those volvos but frankly if I had gotten hit if I did not evade when I did that steel is coming through to chop me up then fill the car and tear the bodies apart. Speeds involved was 40 at my part and at least 60 on theirs. The forces of us coming together would first put the block of the engine on them breaching the integrity of the car before the frame rode up on them the rest of the smash will consist of the beams coming through to finish me off and then out the front. It would either be a straight slice slice chop chop or crushed by the way overloaded failed headache rack plate.
Anything and everything is possible in a smash. Physics a thousand ways. -
Like I said, I don’t want to die, so if he can pm me the phone number and address of his dealership that would be great.
Ouch, that hurts. -
Here, let me help the Fact Checking challenged...

I can't drive a Volvo. I don't wear dirty sweats and flip flops and I don't drive with my foot up on the dash.
spyder7723, Dale thompson, buddyd157 and 4 others Thank this. -
I’m sold. Where and how can I get these wonderful trucks. You can pm me if you want.
