Anyone has any advise about a DIY sleeper for a 26 ft freightliner 33K weight? We have someone charging $2500 to build one but we are thinking the DIY might cost $500. We are handy but struggling with materials dimensions as there are no DIY threads out there.

    Thanks in advance!

Are you building a sleeper in the box?

Or are you moving the box back and putting a sleeper on it?

Building the sleeper in the box and cutting behind the driver side for access.

§393.76 will give you everything you'll need to know regarding sleeper berths...dimensions, equipment, access, etc.

I saw them done on some of our competitions powder trucks way back. Usually 36" of the box and 4' height. 3/4" plywood and then upholstered. Usually popped out rear window and cut hole same size in box,,a crawl through hole. That was the cheapest and quite simple, add in whatever you like as far as heat/ac/ lights. We opted for a standard 36" bunk on our straight trucks at about $3000 installed early '80's but hauling powder only required a 16' box as we were limited to 5000 kgs high explosives at that time

Well you can't haul hazmat, there has to be a separation between the two units, not just a piece of plywood. There has to be a gap between the two units.

And i would not have anyone in the sleeper with a load while driving. There is no means to protect the person in a sleeper if the load shifts on a sudden stop, they can be killed.

But I will be honest with you, it is a stupid idea.

Sell the truck, look for an expediter truck which can be found everywhere and has what you want.

There are specs in your country for building sleeper compartment into cargo box. Bulkhead, restraints etc. Those are what is driving your builders costs up. You also get storage compartments, all that good stuff. Price a new 36” bunk installed and you’ll think $2500 a bargain
