Say in the desert on 1-10 in Arizona or i-40 where there isn't much traffic and stopping so you can just go faster thus saving time. Is it beneficial fuel mileage wise?
I like to go 62 but if but for those traffic lanes then why not I go 68 out there if it saves time and money. Does it? What do you guys think?
Does speeding save fuel?

Down hill racing is approved by the EPA.

Yes. Um no.
Air resistance goes up as a square function in relation to speed.shatteredsquare, stillwurkin, Rounded_nut and 1 other person Thank this. -
well on today's police cars, with better aerodynamics, and engines that produce high horsepower with little effort, they do not burn up as much fuel as cop cars from the 70's, and 80's, and early 90's..so i'd say YES, speeding saves on police car fuel........plus with aircraft over head, and better radios, and speed cameras, also saves the police on fuel, as they can just mosey on over to you and pull you over.

Really?

But wait, what about the most efficient Rpm for your engine? Is that at 67?? Then it might be better.Trucking in Tennessee Thanks this.

I dont think hed have to worry about the police out west at 68 mph.
Zeviander and Swiss Mountain Dog Thank this. -
Oh yes. The reason about all large fleets are governed at varying speeds in the 65 mph neighborhood is so their drivers will get more pilot points.
Dave_in_AZ Thanks this. -
I'm going to get my pilot licence. So when they ask me if I have when when I'm pulled over for going trpple digits.
Why just because. I'm old skool at heart. Just born to late.

No it burns more fuel to hold 40 ton at speed. You require more horses at the drives. At some point your engine reaches it's ability and cannot give you anymore. I had a dollar truck back in the 90's that ranged from 3 to 5 miles to gallon depending on what ridges we pulled at 90 upgrade loaded. Fueling was outrageous.
What does save fuel is having a large amount of horses to keep the hourly fuel burn down combined with a gearing to run 70 on certain areas of the USA.
Some of the greatest fuel records Ive seen is east of Limon into Western Kansas on 70 during spring or summer storm fronts that move fast enough to stay with you at 70 pushing on the truck from certain angles to produce 15-20 miles to gallon.intrepidor, Lepton1, BUMBACLADWAR and 4 others Thank this.
