6000 break strength X 4 = 24,000# of restraint.
3000 pounds @ 60 mph = nearly 110,000# of force.
Not even close. Even if you went with the flat hooks instead of the snap hooks and doubled the break strength, you'd STILL be at less than half of what you'd need to hold back the load.![]()

does this look just plain wrong

I happen to have a tire for my bike in my office, and a length of cord. I held the backside of the cord high against the table leg I stood the tire against, used my foot to hold tension on the front. As long as the cord was below the midpoint of the tire at the tread, it loosened as I slid it down the perimeter of the tire.
You'd be right if the strap crossed the tread above the midpoint of the tire.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
In a full on front collision I wonder how the industry standard strap over the tire would hold up with two small hooks hooked into a perforated deck?
Or how about a roll over?
Do you think you could suspend a 6,500 # pick up upside down by 8 small hooks hooked in the deck?NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
The hooks aren't the weak link, it's the decking. The true strap trucks have much thicker deck plate than the chain trucks.
Supposedly, California was requiring guys with ratchet straps on chain trucks to use four straps instead of the federally required two.skinnyb01, Terry270 and brian991219 Thank this. -
Those are some crappy straps, a good BA Products wheel strap will have a WLL between 5,400 and 6,600 pounds with a minimum safety factor if 4:1, so the ultimate failure load would be 21,600 to 26,400 per strap. Hammer has it right below, the strap and hook is not the weak link the decking is.passingthru69, Terry270 and Hammer166 Thank this.

Doesn't matter hooks or decking......
I believe that a chain trailer properly tied down would out perform every time in the event of a full on collision or rollover.
The manufactures make us use straps but what about safety?Tropsnart Thanks this. -
I use four straps every time......
Just can't get there in my head with only two but I do see it all the time.Hammer166 Thanks this. -
Half the mental midgets around here run around with one on the front car, two on the back two, and nothing on the rest. High-mount heroes abound!Terry270 Thanks this.

You got that right !
It scares the #### out of me...... -
We have a guy who runs out of Newburgh, never ties anything down and is always hiting curbs and such with his trailer, really scarry to share the highway with.NavigatorWife, Terry270 and Hammer166 Thank this.
