If you run hard in this industry can you make decent money, even with all the regulations and HOS? Can you tell a company you want to stay out longer than the time they give you. Lets say 8 weeks out instead of just 4 weeks? Thanks for the advice. This industry really does make America operate thats why I have a desire to drive and be part of the trucking community. Please explain a 34 hr reset?
Take care and be safe everyone.

HiJD,
Companies love you to stay out longer. You can make great money if you work hard. I worked as a flatbedder for tmc and made 64K my first year. The HOS regs are getting stricter, but mostly they protect us form the companies making us run tired. Some of the regs are stupid, but complaining about them wont make you more money. I run electronic logs (no fudging the time) and I still make a lot of money. The key is time management. You need to make the most of your clock to make the big bucks.
There are 4 clocks you need to worry about.
8 Hours----You can only be on duty or driving for 8 hours before you need a 30 min break
11hour----You can only drive 11 hours before a 10 hour break (to drive the full 11 you need a 30 min break before 8 hours)
14 hour----From when you first go on duty or drive, you must stop the truck 14 hours later. This clock can not be stopped and does not pause when the truck stops. 14 hours later the truck must stop regardless of how much was driven
70 hour-----you can only be on duty or driving for 70 hours in the last 8 days. (60 in 7 for some companies)
34 hour reset---Resets the previous 7 days hours worked to 0 if you take 34 hours off. This can only be used once per week and must include 2 periods between 1 and 5 am.
Basicaly on duty is all time spent working, but not driving. The 70 hour clock gets used up if your driving or on duty. the 11 only gets used up if your driving. the 14 gets used up no matter what in 14 hours. (unless you split log, but that more confusing) The 11 and 14 can be reset with a 10 hour break. The 70 can only be reset with the 34 reset.
The70 has a rolling 7 day history of hours. Hours you worked 8 days ago drop off your total worked and be come available today. if your careful you may never need a 34 reset.JD56, DRVNDRVR, DoneYourWay and 3 others Thank this. -
well if you do your homework and choose the right company decent starting money is there....and you don't have to stay out weeks at a time. i'm home almost every weekend and cleared 44k my first year and for the most part run east of the mississippi....not bad money in my part of the country. doing much better than that going into my 3rd year now. if I want to stay out I can. there are no limits on how long you can stay out with most companies. hell they love that. then they don't have to worry about getting you home. I like my time with my family and like to run the roads. I found a company that lets me do both.
the 34 resets your log back to 70 hours so you have a full 70 to run. with the new change in HOS in july, you must include 2 periods of 1am-5am in that 34. for guys like me that both like to run nights and get home almost every weekend it really sucks. that 34 hour reset that used to be 34 and go now ends up being 40-48hrs depending on when I get in on Friday into Saturday morning. get in at 1:05am on Saturday and you're screwed until Monday morning at 5am. and it's happened. more than once. it just resets your logbook back to a full 70hrs so you can start a new week. you don't have too reset. if you manage your hours correctly and have runs that allow it you can recap and never reset just run off the hours you gain back each day after the 8th day. I know several guys that run that way and haven't reset in weeks to months. -
Is it possible to drive for 8 hours, log out for a 30 minute break, and then log out for the 10 hour break, making it a total break of 10 hours and 30 minutes?
Then afterwards, a new day starts all over for the 14 hour day? -
the 30min and 10hour can be combined, so you would only need to be off-duty for 10 hours to reset your 8,11 and 14. But why would you only drive 8 hours in a day when you can drive 11 with a 30 min break.

if your on the east coast. you'll only drive 8 hours apparently. cuz it's practically impossible to find parking any time of day. depending on where your at.
and then, there's the idea. that you can roll 7 days a week by working only 8 hours.
and on another note. i can see why the accident rate is higher today then last millenium. trucks are driving like speed maniacs. to get their miles in. because of the machine and the gooberment clock.
a concept unheard of by the gooberment and mothers against tired truckers.
mothers against tired truckers. what a novel association group.landstar8891 and gokiddogo Thank this. -
Depends on what your definition of ''alot'' is...I know a guy that stays out for 4 weeks and grosses 1500.00 as a company driver..His take home is 900.00,give or take...
