Insurance companies do not have to compete for trucking liability business. Most carriers are on the bubble as it is, even if they have relatively good history. Carriers practically have to beg for umbrella coverage and catastrophic event coverage.
The underwriters see the trucking segment as a high risk anyway, no matter their history or what they do.
The driver facing cams are to reduce the number of lesser in-house crash settlements from lots of drivers crashing while distracted. The major losses are assumed anyway.
They may help to keep expensive coverage or keep from getting dropped but I doubt they will reduce any premiums by any substantial amounts.

If something bad happens, having footage that removes any doubt about the drivers negligence is not good for the driver nor the company nor the insurance company. I honestly don't see how it shifts any liability away from the ins. co.
While I oppose driver facing cams I can see how it could help safety, both by helping to identify bad habits and by keeping the driver on their best behavior due to them being watched.x1Heavy Thanks this. -
1. No Driver is gonna be able to keep his both hands on the wheel 8-10 hrs of driving. Sorry, but one hand is gonna come off when i have to scratch myself, pick my nose, turn the radio on, adjust my qualcom, etc.
2. (read what you wrote above). How does film of removing any doubt that driver had both hands on the wheel (when accident occurred) BAD for a driver and insurance companies?
MAN, I sure as hell would not want to be involved in an accident when a dash camera is pointed at me (them attorneys will come up with some violation that you committed).
?snowlauncher and x1Heavy Thank this. -
I just heard that Performance Food Group is "way fanatical" about their Driver Camera program. Turns out they got some kinda system that is activated with ABRUPT movement. At that point;
* A red light that shines at you?
* Then management gets on you about driving habits?
* They then get into Coaching you on your driving skills
* And....they fired 1 driver (that i'm familiar with) for parking near a speed bump while on break and calling his wife from inside the truck!!!
Apparently the dang camera is watching your every move...!!!
CRAZY...is it worth it???x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Second, whenever someone sues the trucking company, every case I've ever read about they sued the driver too. It's just the driver usually doesn't have much to take.
Third, what you are not taking into account, is the first thing any lawyer will do is subpoena the video records of that driver. When they find that the driver has done one thing wrong, which, like you said, we all do, then the company now has a history of employing an unsafe driver. That just increased any settlement or judgement against the company.
There is a reason that Swift disabled all driving facing cameras, while still keeping the out facing camera active. -
I have a driver facing cam in my truck and couldnt care less. I suppose if I was the type of driver that texts, watches videos on their phone or makes peanut butter sandwiches while driving I would be more concerned about what the camera might capture.
If more companies adopt the cameras and that weeds out the dbag drivers I see doing that nonsense on a daily basis then good for them. -
Voice activated? Well, mine would be going all day long talking to myself. lol
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Behavior modification.
I cannot tell you how much I detest behavior mod engineering, behave etc -
Can companies be mature enough to have them only trigger in hard braking or rolling situations instead of normal braking situations? -
Presenting your situation? Taking out a busload of 50 kids? That two million is pathetic. But shoot a bad guy breaching you rdoor and his family sues you, 2 million is plenty to assure a defense against your finances from being 'OJ'ed" (A play on O'LE!) the rest of your life.
