Not to say those cars aremt doing a stupid.....but....why was he following so close he couldnt stop in that kinda rain? This one is as much on the truck as the cars and a perfect example of WHY you leave room to stop in foul weather.

But I'm going to stir the pot a little here because this reminds me of a conversation I was involved in about the recent deadly u-turn crash in Florida.
Of course everyone was blasting the illegal immigrant truck driver, and rightly so, until one individual chimed in with the notion that maybe, JUST MAYBE, the driver of the 4-wheeler might could have possibly done a better job of defensive driving and maybe they could have reacted better or slowed down sooner and maybe survived.
I don't mean to keep beating that dead horse, but in that thread everyone scoffed at that idea, putting all the blame on the truck driver, because there's no way any motorist should see a truck on the shoulder and reasonably expect the truck to just blindly pull out across all lanes in a split second without any warning. Which is a valid enough point, I guess.
So... do we get to apply that same logic here? Should this truck driver get a pass because he shouldn't have to expect two cars to just slam on their brakes for no reason in the hammer lane... right??? If the truck had simply plowed into the cars instead of swerving off the road, would everyone blast the car drivers for suddenly blocking the road unexpectedly for no apparent reason, or would they blast the truck driver for inattentive driving?
Sorry @Arctic_fox I kinda went off on a rant there LOL, that wasn't directed at you in any way, but still, I'm dying to see what everyone has to say about this.Last edited: Aug 31, 2025

The white truck lucked out. Those two dip#### morons in the cars could have cost the driver their life had the trucker not pointed it off the road.
I counted roughly 2 seconds between seeing the white pickup enter the frame and the truck flying down the median. I don't think the truck driver was fully aware what was happening until all there was time for was to aim left and ride the ditch.Last edited: Aug 31, 2025

That said there are reasonable risks and then there is dumb. In this case look at how fast that truck was moving. Easily 70+ by my guess. He had less then 2 seconds to analize and react. The cars are absolute morons and no argument there. But look at the picture as a whole.
Its raining and hard, everyone knows you slow down and give more room in rain to begin with and that its pretty easy for wrecks to happen. And with how hard its coming down i imagine visibility was lower then usual. I cant speak for anyone but me, but when i merge out of the right lane i tend to like to be sure i have at least enough room to stop if something suddenly happens. Moreso in iffy conditions. This driver had at most 1 MAYBE 2 truck lengths between him and the cars judgeing by how fast he came up. So he wasnt.
Clearly following too close and also not doing his best to anticipate what could happen. He was also traveling at full speed, or appears so which i cant verify from a video so i COULD be wrong. But judgeing how he flew....im betting he didnt even slow down. Which also indicates other traffic DID slow which would be tipping me off something is up or things are sketchy so i should give more room. Or at least thats how I would react.
If the cars were already infront of him he should have backed off because id be suprised if he could see them with the spray off other rigs. If they passed him he shpuld have waited a few seconds to let them get clear, if he was following too close to other rigs to see ahead....well that speaks for itself.
So yes the cars being morons started this. But the driver was also clearly in the wrong to MY train of thought. As for the indian guy. Same train of thought, but instead of a professional driver with 100 miles of driving to every 1 of a car they are just standard drivers. So holding them to the same yardstick as a driver is like compareing a kid and his friend group to an NFL team. Not an apples to apples comparison. And even then the indian guy turned with zero warning on a clear day. There were no warnings or anything that should have spiked caution even more then usual unlike in this case.

Is it just me or are more and more people just pulling over willy nilly on the freeway when it rains?
I had almost this exact situation happen to me on the muskogee turnpike (80 mph posted speed limit with most folks going considerably higher) one day. It was raining, not even that badly, and tons of folks decided to pull over on to the shoulder. Why? I have no idea. Tornado alley I suppose, but there had been no such warnings and it was just a thunderstorm. Anyways, some genius is a matte black jeep gladiator decided to pull over too because he saw the other people do it, in the left lane, where there is no proper shoulder. He did not have his lights on. I had just gotten into the left lane to let another truck merge, and had I not noticed the clowns on the shoulder and gotten ready for some ####ery I would have taken the gladiator out. I ended up coming to a complete stop, frantically checking my mirrors and hoping some git r done jacked up ram 2500 doing 95 didn't slam into me before Lil gladiator realized how close he came to being toast and got rolling again. Oh, and the love's turnpike concessions were less than a mile ahead and he exited there.mjd4277, Flat Earth Trucker, D.Tibbitt and 1 other person Thank this. -
The root cause of this is the car drivers' reckless actions. Had they not acted recklessly then the white pickup and the tractor-trailer rig would not have been forced to take evasive action.

In her ruling, the common sense judge lambasted the young man stating that the 60,000 pound truck he chose to cut in front of could not stop since it was, in fact, 60,000 pounds, and that large CMV's cannot stop as quickly as the young man's car.
The look on the young man's face was one of complete shock when he was told that big trucks don't stop quickly like cars do.
The moral of the story is that many four wheelers are completely oblivious to any situation outside their own little sphere.
And that looks to be the case here as we see cars pull over on the left shoulder which is highly ill-advised. This act alone shows just how irresponsible the car drivers are and show a blatant disregard for highway safety.
As drivers, we are not accustomed to seeing vehicles parked alongside the left shoulder either ordinarily, or in the event of an emergency. I suspect these cars weren't pulling over for any real emergency. Notice how slowly these pair of clowns pull over. Not a care in the world. This is certainly evidenced as this pair simply drive away not knowing or not caring about the calamity they had just caused.
As for the trucker, yeah, he probably was driving too fast for conditions, but when a surprise like parking on the left shoulder occurs, it can be startling. Even I am startled by sudden braking by others when I am paying close attention.
It looks like hitting the median may have been the truck driver's only option to avoid a collision as we can't see what is on his right.
And would we not be scolding this driver had he struck those cars? I say this driver chose others above himself even while the four wheelers did the opposite for all to see.Last edited: Sep 3, 2025
