How much experience driving a car should someone have before enrolling in a truck driving program to get their CDL?

I've always lived in the city so I never needed to drive (although I did get my license when I was a teenager and drove a handful of times with Zipcar as an adult). I'm 33 now.

I want to become a truck driver but I'm not sure how much time I should have with a regular car before getting a CDL.

Now, this is a new one on me. lo,
You might just be better off if you have never driven a car, who knows. lol

I have to wonder, if you haven't driven anything much, what is it that made you decide you want to be a truck driver??

I've worked in IT mainly since I graduated from college. I want to do something more physical, more meaningful, and something more in line with my personality and life circumstances. I'm quite introverted, divorced with no kids (and don't plan to marry again), and no real family left. I prefer to work alone.

I hate that I have so little driving experience. Truck driving is actually a means to personal development for me. To master not only driving itself, but driving such a big machine.

I want the freedom that truck driving offers - not just the freedom of the "open road" but the practical freedom of being able to live out of a truck.

Everything I've read about being a truck driver feels right. Obviously I won't know for sure until I start driving a truck - but that's the only way anyone knows for sure.

So that's what appeals to me. I've lurked here and Truckers for over a year now, so this is not a sudden thing for me.

You will have spotless driving record since you have not been driving. If you like driving and listen to radio you probably like truck driving but without driving it's hard to tell. I always liked driving out west the road are really open and no traffic. I spent 7 hours in Chicago today getting loaded and getting out of Chicago. That was no fun, so it also depends on the runs you do, cross country vs reginal or local driving.

If you plan living in the truck cross country runs probably be the best. Their is a lot of regulations in trucking. We have Electronic log books you have to run legal today. That can be good and bad, the clock rules your day now. You can learn to drive a truck. The easy park is driving on the highway. The hard part is driving in the city. People can get overwhelmed Driving in the city traffic if you don't know how to make turns. Then it's not fun and you can make mistake. Like you need 4 lanes to make a right turn. If you don't have 4 lanes you have to split the lanes you in, and take both lanes and hold traffic back. Some truck driving schools don't teach that. Because they train to pass the CDL test.

    Where is your location?
You're good to go as long as you've had a drivers license for 12 months.
Keep it to yourself, in cdl school, that you don't have much actual driving experience.
You seem like a smart guy, so you'll catch on fast.
Can you pass a hair follicle drug test?

    FlaSwampRat and web9204 Thank this.

I can definitely pass any drug tests they may have. I'm in the Washington DC area.

Do you want private cdl school or trucking company cdl school.
Since you plan to live in the truck most of the time, I'd recommend a coast to coast outfit.

I watched the Wilson Logistics cdl school YouTube.
Do the following with any company you choose:
I would take an extra large sleeping bag and pillow; not sheets. You can switch to sheets after you're assigned your own truck and running as a solo driver.
Pack your personal belongings in a flexible duffle bag, not a hard suitcase.
