i have driven a passenger car over the Peace Bridge to Canada on the way to Detroit because it is a short cut. I had no difficulty getting through. Are CMVs allowed to take that route or are they prohibited or require special permits?

There are special lanes for CMV, just make sure all your paperwork is in order. If everything is in order it usually takes no longer than 5 min. to get through customs.
-
Fort Erie is 5 mins maybe with no lines, but that's rare

If you are in a loaded 18 wheeler, that load going into canada has to clear customs. In the Detriot to Winsdor Bridge is a gated stop, there is your initial check with Customs. The REAL customs you need to worry about is about 3 miles on the left downtown after you clear the bridge crossing gates on the Winsdor side. You cannot and will NOT MISS this main customs check site. This is where your load and it's paper work will be allowed to continue or not.
As long you have no felony and no weapons and so on you should have a pretty good time in Canada. Just be prepared to have a list of Metric numbers ahead of time equal to or higher than 13.6 american feet and inches. So that you wont hit bridges.
In my time People were considered adults in Canada at 14. Unfortuantely for us Americans that's jailbait so be very careful how you deal with people of the opposite sex up there. Canada is alot of fun sometimes the exchange rate is in your favor and it's like getting a 35% pay raise just going across.
You will need certain papers to get out of Canada, passport etc in a big truck. Times have changed and not for the better. You usually come out at Buffalo NY Or you come back out in Detroit. Any time and every time you have a canada load going that way, stop in the Detrioter and make a final check with your dispatcher to make sure all of your stuff is in order prior to crossing over. -
If crossing back into the USA empty through buffalo you need the barcode paper saying your empty
-
Note, as previously mentioned on the forum and elsewhere, past DUI's and DWI's are considered felonies in Canada.

Good information for when I start taking runs into the land of Canucks

Just to be on the safe side, for all American truck drivers, male and female alike, be 100% sure that the members of the opposite sex, that you socialize with, are an absolute minimum age of 21 or above.
NOTE:
I will probably get chided for saying this, but here it is:
For all American homosexual and lesbian truck drivers, be 100% sure that the members of the homosexual and lesbian community, that you socialize with, are an absolute minimum age of 21 or above.
