Hi all, new driver writing from IL - is it normal for local drivers to not be paid for the time driving from where the truck is parked to the first trailer pickup? I work for an owner operator who has two rigs (I drive one, he drives the other) in City A, and we drive 50 miles to our first pickup in City B. He says he shouldn't have to pay me for driving those 50 miles (I get paid hourly, and it's about an hour's drive), since he doesn't get paid for that time by the company he gets the jobs from. Shouldn't he pay me for this though since I'm working for him and not the company? It ends up that I'm working 15 hours (including downtime for loading/unloading) and only getting paid for 13 of them. Appreciate your advice.

Sounds intermodal? Typically, let's say you'd have to bob tail to UPG4/BNSF Elwood,IL from the city itself (a good 50 miles one way) most companies wouldn't pay for the bob tail.

    alb85 Thanks this.

I'm on a 1099, so I guess that means I technically am an independent contractor for him rather than his employee..

If you can't take the truck and go where you want and haul what you want then him paying you 1099 is illegal you should quit now and find a legitimate company to work for

Getting paid hourly while I'm under load (and with an empty trailer) - just not being paid for the bobtail at the beginning and the end of the day.
