The best thing to do would be to pull Landstar's company owned vans for a while until you figure out what kind of trailer you need, if any at all. To buy a high cube trailer and then lease on with Landstar is putting the cart before the horse. It may be there are Landstar owners pulling their own specialized trailers like that but this would be because they have a good business relationship with an agent who has that kind of freight. Guarantee you they didn't just buy a cheap high cube then go lease on at Landstar and start making money with it. You'd need to make the right connection and impression with such an agent who had that freight then decide if it was worth it to invest in a specialized trailer.

Drop vans are typically a dedicated run trailer as most shippers do not want to deal with them. I just did a search for you, there were zero loads for them in the US and Canada. There are 4 agents that have used them in the last 6 months.
