I thought I felt a slight high speed vibration the other day and I was due to change gear lube in the drivers. When I pulled the screen in the power divider I found brass pieces that look like they came from a thrust washer. We pulled the power divider yesterday and sent it to the gear shop. They went through it and replaced some shims etc., and we put it back in today. We're going to haul our big excavator tomorrow so it will be a good test to see if this part changer put it back together correctly!
Other than the pieces of brass in the screen for the pump, no. It did have a bit more endplay on the input shaft than it is supposed to have.
Anybody that has looked for parts from a salvage yard has probably seen the name Holst. I know there are negative stories about them, but we have purchased 2 transmissions, one rolling chassis, and one rear drive gear set from them and have had no problems. I called their gear shop Wednesday afternoon guessing that I would have to wait on parts, and spoke to the older gentleman that runs the gear shop. I told him what rears we had, and what we found in the screen, and he said not problem, we stock all the parts. This is on the rear end of a 36 year old truck. We delivered it to him mid-afternoon on Wednesday and it was ready for us to pick up at 8:30 in the morning on Thursday. He didn't have to do much other than dissasemble, add a couple of new shims (thrust washers I guess), and reassemble. He replaced the seal on the yolk as well. In my experience they have been fair in regard to price and the service has been excellent. Perhaps it helps that we live within 25 miles of them, but I thought that they deserved a good recommendation given my experience with them. YMMV?
I didn't measure it with a dial indicator, but there is almost none. This is what I was told was correct. There was maybe a sixteenth of an inch or more prior to taking it out.
