just curious is it legal to run dual authority on a truck, for instance you had your own authority for ABC Trucking but was also gonna haul for DEF Trucking under a contract

It is called trip leasing. Cover your numbers and run their authority for the trip...

Depends who is putting the insurance on the vehicle. If you are truly leasing to another carrier, you should put their numbers and name on the truck. If you are just hauling something for another carrier, they must have broker authority to broker the load to you. You cannot run two DOT numbers on a truck. The DOT wants to know who is responsible in case of an accident, and if two names are on a vehicle, the words "Operated By" must be next to the responsible party.
