If you've ever looked at a tire depth gauge you'll notice that there is only room for the numerators. So its understood that the denominator will be 32. And besides, while smart people know that 4/32 equals 1/8 and so forth, it's something that you have to think about for a split second. It's easier to think in terms of common denominators, even if the fractions aren't reduced.

Just like in the Army with the gauges...
You had a "GO" side and a "NO Go" side....simplicity is the key....
Let the "experts" debate the details....It either works or it doesn't; It either fits or it won't......91B20H8 Thanks this. -

I am so glad i work for a company that cares about tire condition. I never even see tires on trailers that need to be measured here...
Also, nobody brought this up, but 1/32" is a lot more precies than 1/16".....if it was labeled as 2/16, it would be legal until its 1/16th under that, you know.... -
Really want to sound superior? Move to the metric system 3 countries use the dying standard measurement while the rest of the world has advanced. That way we can say 3 mm for steers and 2 mm for the rest

And when you go to wrench on something you need metric and standard sockets and wrenches!!
Rickp Thanks this. -
Depends on what your wrenching I suppose.
