Get a Samsung Galaxy S2 tab 8.0 or 9.7 inch, you will not get a better Android tablet for the price. It has a octa core processor (8 cores) running at 1.8 GHZ, 3GB of RAM and 32 GB of ROM + additional slot for 128 GB memory card. The tablet runs very smooth and it has a excellent super amoled display, very bright. The 8" sells for about $349.00, but you may find it cheaper online.
I just checked the "Keep Trucking" - they have applications for both: Android tablet and iPad....
Get the tablet, install the "KeepTrucking" app from the Android application store and you are good to go.... I am using the same tablet - 8", but your father may prefer the bigger display - 9.7 inch.
You can go with your father in Best Buy to see both tablets in person and decide which one is better for his eyes. Adjust the size of the letters, icons from the settings menu on both 8" and 9.7" and see which one he likes better....

Studebaker Hawk, whoopNride and Rehay Thank this. -
Also, this tab is WI-FI only, no sim card and additional charges from Verizon or any other provider. I am using my phone as a hot spot to provide internet for the tablet. I have unlimited plan from Verizon and it is less expensive this way, than getting a Verizon tablet. The ELD uses a very little internet data, just to get your location.

Whatever you use,it must be displayed all the time so driver can see it (it's the law). You can't just use a big tablet and close the cover sleeve and leave it on the passenger seat.
My choice would be a used smartphone with bad ESN or ONE I because you can get it cheap. You can use it without SIM card just for running the software for your ELD. I have my galaxy note 8 as my primary phone and my old Note 5 become my e-log/backup phone. -
You can get a tablet mount or you can display it on your dash with the current samsung case.
With 8" or 9.7" your logs are easy to see, not only for your eyes, but also for the eyes of the inspecting officer. If the LEO has problem reading your logs on a small display, he will ask you for a print out or e-mail transfer. This will extend the DOT inspection with another 15-20 minutes.Last edited: Dec 31, 2017
whoopNride Thanks this. -
So you leave your phone on Hot Spot all the time, or do you just turn it on hot spot occasionally to let the tablet/log update?

I leave my phone on hot spot all of the time. No problem with this. The ELD needs a very little data, just to get the location.
Well, you can get a Android tablet with SIM card and be independent from your phone, but will be more expensive this way.....whoopNride Thanks this.
