If you are going to a CDL class/school you will learn what they teach you to drive. It is not your choice unless you find a school that teaches with automatics. (Most don't)
You are less valuable to a company or yourself if you can't drive a manual. If you need a rental and an automatic is not available you are losing the company money.

actually that is not true - when it comes time to take the driving portion you can opt for the E-restriction if they do certified road tests....no one can force you to take a road test w/ a Manuel if your opting out for an E-restriction.

Again, my question is why you would WANT the restriction if you could get the license without it. Even if my fleet were all automatic, I'd hire the driver without the restriction over a driver with the restriction if they were otherwise equally qualified. Why? As stated, if the truck breaks down, I can rent whatever is available for temporary use rather than you sitting around being unproductive while I'm trying to find a rental with an auto.

The more you are able to do, the less likely you are to be out of work, and the easier it is to find work. It is called versatility. The more you CAN do, the more you are worth to any prospective employer. If you don't care what you drive or what kind of trailer you pull, or what sort of freight goes in/on the trailer, then opportunities open up for you. Especially when you're new, boxing yourself into only driving a specific truck with a specific transmission pulling a specific type of freight in a specific type of trailer...well, there are only a handful of companies that do that specific sort of work, and they may not want you because like you they are picky.
