I don’t know if this is the right section but I am looking for another truck and wondering the earliest year truck I would be able to install a ELD in. I am looking at a few late 90s 379s with either a C15 or 60 Series. Company I’m leased on with wants ELDs but I don’t do the post-emission trucks. From what I understand so far, they would still be electronic engines & the mechanical ones were last made in the early 90s.
Would I be able to hook up an ELD to say a 1997 engine?

I have a 97 International with a n-14. Head mechanic at our shop says if it has a plug to hook a diagnostic reader to it you can hook up a ELD.

I know a guy that runs an ELD with a mechanical Cat.

I don't know the name of the company but there is one that makes a J1939 interface for mechanical engines. They've been around for 15 years now and saw a few mid-90's trucks with ELDs installed with this system installed to make it all work.
By the way, pre-emissions are 2006 or newer.rabbiporkchop and YeaImRJ Thank this. -
I have yet to put the truck on the road yet so do not have it hooked to a ELD yet.YeaImRJ Thanks this. -

And in case anybody wondered, when they imposed egr, everybody panicked, so the engine manufacturers ramped up production in the last year. The truck manufacturers could use excess inventory until new engines were used up. The 2002 model engines lasted through 2004 so it looks like 2004 trucks are pre-egr and 2005 are egr.
