The Cliff notes, condensed version? Because the truckers were unable/unwilling to follow any of the regulations because they were "powerless" to say "no" to the companies.. and then some bright boy decided to allow a news crew to go out with him and he showed them how he could and was cheating the logs and how fatigued he was.... because he was unable to say "no" and worked anyway... and then a great voice of the victims (truckers) was heard and they demanded that the government step in and save them from the big mean old trucking companies.... and the government did.. Using Union LTL / Linehaul companies, they did fatigue studies and discovered that the hours of service then were basically idiotic and were killing drivers... so they did sleep studies and changed the regulations so drivers could work closer to a set schedule on a 24 hour clock. But even then they couldn't and wouldn't follow the regs and a few very public fatal crashes involving these victims (truckers) and innocent motorists.. and VIOLA! You get the ELD's. The whole thing is entertaining as all get out!

Unions (organized crime) pushed for eld because it meant more drivers/union dues. Hat tip to them for pulling off such a massive plot

Just as much as they are now apparently.. Did you miss the narrative of the OP accidentally or on purpose? This is the standard fare for the run of the mill super trucker... Blame everyone but themselves for allowing themselves to be abused. They never blame the company who they work for.. its always the "government" Just like every "COPS" show out there... the abused is standing their bleeding, the abuser is locked up in the back of the cop car, and the abused is blaming the cops for locking up poor little poopsie who will be down spending the rent money to bail the abuser out as soon as they can get to the jail... I love how the "organized" truckers are the ones who have and will always get things done.. while several times a year, some super trucker talks about their "strike".. that has no organization at all, no direction and no representation on any level whatsoever.

I’m just waiting for the whining about amphetamines being against the law. HOS regulations aren’t meant to “nanny” truck drivers as much as they’re designed to save the lives of the folks we share the roads with. Tired truckers kill people.

The ATA and safety Nazis were the ones who pushed the ELDs. Same people are pushing for speed limiters and for longer and heavier rigs. To "level the playing field" they say. Very few things these groups spend money pushing are of any benefit to the drivers out here.
And yes the HOS has been around for a long time. Since 1937, with adjustments here and there along the line, the major one in 2004. They were instituted to promote safety, but mainly to keep companies from working their drivers to death.

What idiot lets an employer "work them to death"? Just walk away.

Ridiculous hyperbole with these eld huggers: kids "starving to death" and drivers being "worked to death" lmao

I'm not the one claiming starving and dying kids, people worked to death. If you feel like someone's working you to death just walk away
