I have my current, valid CDL A. I want to add my Hazmat endorsement. Do I need the ELDT general training and ELDT hazmat; or, just ELDT hazmat to take my state hazmat test?
Just do the ELDT test. In my state, you then get your Hazmat packet from the DMV, and test at the State Police HQ's. The ELDT was a joke. I already had my CDL, just decided to get HM. Had to pay a school to go in and take a 5 minute test, and take that to the DMV.

There are many online training providers for ELDT. Google FMCSA Training provider registry. But you can do ELDT with an online or real world training provider. Make sure you see the training provider listed in the FMCSA Training Provider Registry before you pay. Training Provider Registry
Each state has their order for the multi-step HM process. Read your state's process on the state web site & follow it exactly. None of the online strangers giving you answers are going to sit in the DMV office for hours helping you clear up a mistake they or you caused. NOT ALL ANSWERS ARE EQUAL. This is a regulation & procedure question. Only people in your state have followed the state required procedure. How long did it take any of you get approved by the TSA? I see something about 60 days in their FAQs.
It takes a range of time. Sometimes it can be a week or two and sometimes it can take 60 days. The TSA will send you an email. When you receive the email go to the Driver License office to finish the process. In my state, yours may be different, I can take the HM knowledge test before I give fingerprints, before I get the TSA email. Once you have HM you can't just let the endorsement expire. That will cause your CDL to be canceled. To get rid of HM you MUST go to DMV & exchange your CDL with HM for a replacement CDL without HM.
