Hello! I've been a stay at home dad for the last 5 years. Now that my kid is old enough to be in school full time, I'm eager to get back into the work force, and would like to enroll in a CDL school. Before I drop the $4,000 though, I wanted to make sure I'd actually be employable since I've been reading that most companies have strict employment history requirements. Is this going to be a problem? Its got me really nervous.
(I've been doing side work as a handyman and sell hand crafted furniture, but its all been off the books... er uh, "below the reporting threshold")
Employable without work history?

Yes, fill in apps as your history dictates. Women do it.

Are you prepared to leave your wife and kids for 2-4 weeks at a time? Dont do it. You will go to sleep every night in the truck thinking about what a piece of #### father you are. At least i did. Yeah youll find work though.
rabbiporkchop, Canned Spam and demi Thank this. -
Well, I live in a major metro area and was thinking I'd try to do LTL, Food Service, or construction, that kind of thing rather than OTR. I'm very physically fit and dont mind hard work (the jobs I've had in the past were all warehousing, truck unloading/loading, etc, so touching freight isnt a foreign concept).
I dont mind "doing time" OTR for a year to get experience if necessary, but my school mentioned McElroy is one of their main recruiters they work with, so maybe I could get lucky and work for a company like that (out during week, home on weekends). I dont know. I'm willing to take a bite of a #### sandwich to get my foot in the door, so long as I know I'll have prospects of a long term career that actually pays a living wage.
(as a side note, my criminal and driving history are 100% squeaky clean) -
Its not the companies that have strict employment histories, its the FMCSA that mandates the ten year history. Your employable don't stress it. Just account for all gaps in the history and be prepared to present proof if asked for. -

Get on with a redi-mix outfit ( concrete ), that's in your area.

its not so much the work history but what have u been doing the yrs required on the app.since you dont have any driving exp I think all you'll need is the last three yrs.you've been a stay at home dad so just put that down

Or something where driving isn't your major responsibility. Like a local moving company or something trade related.
-
OP, you are employable, and you do not have to spend 1 day otr, especially if you dont mind labor. Foodservice, coke, pepsi, dr pepper, beer distributors, water delivery, some freight companies, and many small companies hire local with no experience. If you tell us what city you are in we can probably give you some specific companies to look into.
