    More Training needed , go down mountain at around 5 below the posted speed for truck. Every time the truck gets back to the actual speed limit apply brakes while engine retarder is on , do not appy brakes to the floor. A steady light braking , count as you are steady lightly braking 1-1000 2-1000 3-1000 4-1000 5-1000
    By time you make it to maybe 6 or 7. You should have slowed down at least 3 to 4 mph , and that will get you back to almost or at 5 below the speed limit. You should not be smoking brakes if you do it just like that.
    At 5 below posted speed you have time to stop before you loose all braking from smoking the brakes unless you have major out of adjustment brakes.

    To test brakes while sitting with cooled off brakes only !! When parked set trailer brakes only. Do not set or apply truck brakes.
    Now put truck in lowest gear to move forward and see if trailer moves with you. If it does easily , then they need adjusting. Take to shop.
    To test truck brakes do same thing.
    To test a truck and trailer brakes set all brakes. And try to move truck and trailer easy. Don't just gas on it. You flaten tires. Just barely see if you can move. If you can't move then all brakes are good. And adjusted.
