Here's a hot one...... lots of my fellow drivers insist their oil comes from a jug at change. They pay more for this too. Ok fine........and I took the challenge. Bought my brand in bulk and monitored temps and pressures under diff. situations and then went jug with same tests at next change.

    #### if I didn't see a marked improvement in pressure and engine temp. Jug oil also looks much better deep into the change interval...........ok so I'm a jug man from now on......

But WTF? I called the mfg. and he assured me it's the same stuff. Said it would cost him out the yang to have 2 formulas of the same stuff on the loose.......and was at a loss to explain test results.

So is oil change guy selling out like 1 drum of good stuff then refilling drum with garbage to increase bottom line? Wouldn't be the first time someone tried this........

    Whatcha think drivers?

It's the same stuff. I run a Shell European variant of Rotella, same specs as Rotella and it works just fine, out of a barrel.

Jug, because it's actually cheaper. I buy all my oil in May and October, when Delvac has rebates.

Several years ago, I worked for an Exxon oil distributor. We got jug oil from a packaging plant. But we did our own bulk in 5 gal and 55 gal drums. Where the quality of the product dropped is on the first container of the product being filled, particularly when the operator didn't purge the hose properly when switching products. The owner would label these containers as "first" and were sold to customers who insisted on deep discounts. There were protocol on what products to run after a product to reduce the risk of cross contamination of ATF , power steering fluids and other "light" oils. When the fill plant operator hit the doobie, there was no telling what that first container had in it.:biggrin_255:

before i drove a truck, i worked for a very well known fast lube/auto repair business in the greater chattanooga area. the business had and still has a major contract with a huge oil company. i will not give the name, but trust me what i tell you is true as i worked there twice for almost 10 years total.

when the weekly delivery of bulk oil came in for the "sponsored house brand" it came in a tanker truck. usual delivery was around 5000 gallons for the different weights etc. the trick of the game was sliding the driver a little side money to fill up the competing companies bulk drums with the "sponsored" house oil and no one was the wiser.

if you do not see the oil being poured from a sealed bottle into your car, id bet dollars to donuts your getting the same treatment. its a HUGE difference in money paid out for other non house oils. that is why places like that charge a few dollars more for the bottled oils.

And that would explain the difference in oil pressure readings when changing from drum to jug. I personally suspect the station owner of this...... he's just so cheap on everything that I wouldn't be surprised.

well i can get a 55 gallon drum of rotella 15w40 for 599.00 now take that and devide by 55 and it equals 10.89 a gallon. now at all the stores around me its 17.00 a gallon jug. 17x55=935.00
    935.00-599.00=336.00 in savings
