If a new driver wants to get a CDL this year (before 2020), could he get his CLP and ride around with an experienced driver, then go take the test? Or do I have to put him through Entry-Level Driver Training?

I never went to a school other than to do my pretrip and road test and as far as I know you can still do that I think that you have to have your permit for 30 days minimum before you can go to the school to test though

Usually the DMV wants certain things. A licensed full grown CDL driver in charge of a semi or appropriate vehicle such as one of your bigger buses etc. Whatever it might be.
Once that shows up along with those who hold permits it's show time. Test away pass or fail.
Thats all I will write here. Just to stay within the narrow range of your topic question. -
Yes you can, we do it all the time. It is better than any school as far as I am concerned.

Official training is not required to get the license. Some/many trucking companies will not hire a driver with no experience and no accredited schooling.buzzarddriver and FlaSwampRat Thank this.

If I knew you personally and like you I would train you but with a cheap trailer your not driving the expensive rigs -
In arizona, you just need to pass the test. How you learn what's needed to pass that test is your problem.

You can do that now, but as of Feb 7 2020 ELDT training by an entity on the fed provider list will have to be done.

And to be more specific, you need the learners permit before Feb 7 to get your CDL after that date without an entry level school.
