I will be starting my journey into becoming a OTR driver just after the new year. Aside from food, shower, and personal items, what other expenses should I expect from being over the road? Do most companies have a way to reimburse you for maintenance expenses? I also read about a driver receiving a cash advance from their company, what would that be used for?

    Thanks,

Cash advances are to cover truck expenses not already covered, like scales, tolls, oil, washer fluid.

Some companies allow you to pay for those with the fuel card or have EZ pass, etc., others don't.

Turn in the receipts and they will deduct that from the cash advance. So if you took a $100 advance and spend $120, they owe you $20.

Doubt you'll have mechanical expenses.what you do if call dispatch tell them what the issue is like a burned out bulb they'll give you a p.o. number which you then write on a check you'll get issued during orientation.but if you do pay out of your pocket you turn in your receipt with your paperwork.but on the receipt write down what you bought.cash advances could be for tolls lumpers or the drivers personal use.

I hate reimbursements, mainly because the IRS counts it as income and it gets taxed. So if you spend anything at all you won't get it all back

I never call the boss if it's under $100. Like putting the spare on or something.

Now if I have to buy a new tire at 2am...somebody is getting woken up.

That's different if none is working at night.but with me gas which more then likely will be the ops first company there's always ppl working at night..one time I sat for a couple hrs for my boss to get his happy ### down to his office and get me a po number for a lumper .he wanted me to drop trailer and bobtail to an ATM and use my card.that's when I said you either get your happy ### up and go get me a pro number or I'll park it on the street and you'll have to reschedule.he got the number then said in a low tone when you get back to the yard you and I are going to talk. never happened though he got over it lol.

I'm surprised he had to go to the office. My dispatcher can get me a check number from his company iPhone without getting his ### out of bed. :)
