Ok guys, my dad has been off the road for about 7 1/2 years now. He has 19 years experience. He's thinking about going back driving. He picked up a CDL studying book Friday at the drivers license place. He said he wants a gig that'll get him home every weekend. He has no interest in flatbeds. Since he's been off the road for a while, he's not up to date with the trucking industry as far as companies go. What would you recommend? I know theirs loads of info on this forum, but I want honest answers from people. Not no mumbo jumbo.

first off being off the road that long he may have to take a refresher course, but i think his best bet will be a local gig.

What has been mentioned on here is that most companies due to insurance regulations require driving with no gaps like that, they don't consider in the past as being current so he most likely will have to take some sort of refresher course at the least.

But have him check and see if there is some sort of local janitor supply like Newell Paper that do regular routes. Son in-law got onto one of their places going the route from here to about 60 miles away. It does require in some cases loading before you leave, and then unloading when you deliver to each place.

    Good luck to him.

This is true. He will more than likely go with someone small(er). I can tell ya right now he won't do the refresher course deal. He drove every day basically for 19 years.

Milan is about a 1 hour 30 mins from here. Not a prob. They have a training school so I'm not sure what they will say in his case.

I was off the road since 1990 , got my cdl back and hired on with a local outfit thats running 53' reefer otr c2c. I run into that recent experience bulls--t also. Driving is like riding a fricken bike or having sex , you just don't forget.... So look for local outfit to work for till you get your saddle time back up there. Good luck and god speed...

    Voltrucker Thanks this.

Hope your dad finds something he likes. Personally, I agree with JIMROY.

The insurance companies require a refresher course because the odds of an experienced driver getting in an accident after returning from a long absence are right up there with the numbers that rookies post. Those odds go way down if they attend a refresher course. It's not BS, its cold, hard actuarial fact. The insurance companies are in control of who gets the seat time these days.

That being said, if your dad looks hard enough, I'm sure he'll find someone willing to put him in a seat without the refresher course.

    Voltrucker and JIMROY Thank this.

the only part of that argument i disagree with is the long absence from driving , cause i didn't quit driving just quit herding a class 8 truck and still have no accidents. What is it with insurance companies is another way to f--- u out of a nickle. Half these companies are hiring truck school grads who have no experience , alot of them have trouble with downshifting or are scared to death of it ( fear of doinking it.) They are not taught to drive a truck so much as taught to pass a skills test at dmv to get that cdl, that does not give them experience. I wonder how many of you truck school grads were taught how to strap a load onto a flatbed or how to tarp a load, or chain down a cat on a lowboy in school. i would bet 98% maybe saw a video about it or heard about doing it rather than actually doing it. Then they are sent out with trainers who couldn't care less about really training them, they just want that free driver to pad their paycheck... The industry has given the insurance company control, rather than have the balls to tell them to jump in the lake with concrete shoes on.... It don't take an old experienced driver long to remember once he climbs back in the saddle, its like a dam breaking , it all comes flooding back. You spend your first week going down memory lane remembering all the things you used to do and wondering if they still work the same.

Stats can be manipulated anyway you want. The teachers do it all the time , and the kids still can't spell or read a tape measure or count change..... I for one, kept my hand in driving off hiway which helped. But heres another thought , some of these 4 door pickups being driven to the supermarket by a woman whose 4' 10" are #### near as big as a tractor these days. Lol

there are plenty of outfits out there that hire without the recent experience clause. I find its mostly the majors who are doing that... And if a hand wants to have family time local is great.... I had 6 offers before i got my skills tests done base on past years experience , the said get your cdl finished and call me back and we will do paperwork and road tests. So its take my pick basically....

So i wonder how many folks forget how to have sex , when they haven't had any recent experience lol

It is what it is. You and I may not like it, and I doubt an insurance company makes anything off of a refresher course.
