Sometime in the not so distant future I'm planning on selling my half of the 55 ton Fontaine I been pulling. It's a darn good trailer, but the other half owner (The old Man) needs it all summer long and that's when I need it the most as well.

I really need a longer well more than I need a 55ton trailer with a big tall arch in it.

I ran across a Trail King HED 45ton extendable that I really liked the specs on and it got me thinking. 28' in the well and just shy of 50' opened up. It's a 48 footer with a 3rd flip. Narrow hyd neck with 36" flip box. Open rear bogie with excavator well.

Any guesses what something like this would weight?
The Fontaine 55ton I figure was around 23,000 bare bones. Thinking this 45ton extendable will be 25 maybe up to 27? I dunno?
I could live with being a few thousand heavier than I am now in the trade. But if it's a bunch more that will change my thinking fast.
    What say you?

I'm curious what the difference is too.

@old iron I'm sorta in the same boat as far as wondering what an extendable weighs.

I found a 40 ton Fontaine extendable that's 29' In the well closed and 50' opened up. It's a Mechanical neck. Tandem axle but it does have provisions for a flip. Has a deck on front and rear.

The person I'm talking to about it doesn't know what the trailer actually weighs, so I'm curious if anyone here knows or has a rough idea.

    Sorry to hijack

I have a 35T XL extendable with a flip axle. It's about 22K for just the trailer and about another 2K for the flip axle. Mine is a mechanical neck with a 10ft front deck/neck and no flip neck.

My 35T TK Mechanical RGN is about 17K on it's own and another 2K for that axle as well.

Your guess of 25-27 is probably pretty close but I'd lean more towards the 27 end of it.

Comes in at 20k without the flip axle or flip neck, 23k with the flip axle without the flip neck, just shy of 25k with flip axle & flip neck.

I know this is an old thread, however what would the empty weight of an 55ton extendable steerable RGN with three axles come in at? XL,Trail King,Faymonville or even a Transmaster for that matter as equipment manufacturers.

The Faymonville is the heaviest of the bunch. I'm close to 74k depending on which inserts. We never remove the fourth flip axle because it's such a PITA.

my Transmaster with 71’ of deck and the 4th axle weighs just over 50k pounds this trailer does not stretch but is built with deck sections. The upside is a deck height as low as 15”.
when I pull the steerable stretch version as a 12 axle my empty weight is about 105k with 70’+ of well with about a 20-22” Deck height.

my Fontaine 55MX 29-50’ in the well with flip neck and 4th axle weighs about 33k. The XL super stretch my buddy has 33’-59’ as a 3 axle is within 1-2k of the weight.

    cke Thanks this.
