I passed the pre trip just fine and I passed backing skills with 0 points off
but failed the driving portion. One of my biggest problems is I can not get a smooth take off out of 3rd gear, I will sometimes stall out or the truck bounces around way too much. Any pointers on how to take off smoothly. Just trying to get my CDL for lineman school so I never have to drive a semi again. Obviously not my passion but I dont have much of a choice. It sounds like Im holding my brake way too long before my clutch but I need to use my brake so I dont roll back. All help and pointers will help please.

Take off in first. At least that's what was a requirement when I took the MI CDL. Starting in any other gear was a fail, or so our school instructor kept telling us.

Our instructor teaches us to come out of third only. Maybe start at 2?

It's only one shift. Start in first.
Once you get your CDL then drive it correctly. Until then drive it like the DMV wants it.

Well my dmv instructor told me to stop in 6th and move into 3rd at every stop. Not much down shifting needed.

Start in 1st, easy to get the truck rolling, them low rpm shift it to 2nd, it makes the shift super easy and no real chance for bouncing around, then just proceed thru the gears as normal.

They need to test these instructors. I guarantee most would fail.

Wow that school is messed up to be teaching you to start in third gear.

Or is the real problem that you dont like to use a standard transmission?

Rubber duck kw and Tx Countryboy Thank this.
